Description

The 3500/42 is a four-channel machinery protection card designed for the Bently Nevada 3500 series machinery protection system, providing continuous tracking of machinery vibration and displacement. This continuous-monitoring processing module accepts electrical signals from proximity sensors, velocity sensors, or accelerometers. The 3500/42 filters and scales these raw transducer waves into standard engineering variables, evaluating real-time operational health parameters such as radial shaft vibration, axial thrust position, eccentricity, acceleration, velocity, and differential expansion.

Operating within a 3500 rack assembly, the module cross-references every active measurement channel against hardware-configured alert and danger setpoints. When programmed parameters exceed normal thresholds, the board drives immediate alarm signals over the rack backplane to trigger automatic interlock and equipment trip commands, independent of peripheral workstation software. The device layout includes individual channel pairing configurations and independent proportional recorder output loops to interface with plant management systems and external historians.

Features

  • Four-channel sensor processing matrix accepting concurrent proximity, velocity, or acceleration inputs.
  • Comprehensive functional programming supporting radial vibration, thrust position, eccentricity, and differential expansion.
  • Configurable input channels arranged in pairs to execute independent signal conditioning and tracking routines.
  • Front-panel buffered transducer outputs providing immediate coaxial access for external dynamic diagnostic analyzers.
  • Redundant 3500 backplane connectivity maintaining consistent channel parameter comparisons and safety interlock routing.
  • Distinct front faceplate diagnostic indicators providing immediate status visibility for module OK, TX/RX bus activity, and bypass modes.

Applications

  • Continuous radial vibration and oil-film bearing breakdown tracking across critical plant turbo-compressors.
  • Direct axial shaft thrust positioning and rotor displacement loops inside heavy-duty power generation steam turbines.
  • High-accuracy mechanical casing acceleration and structural velocity vibration cross-checks on large balance-of-plant motor skids.

Installation Guidelines

  • Rack Insertion: Guide the module chassis straight along the clear plastic slot tracks located to the right of the Rack Interface Module. Push firmly until the terminal array sits completely inside the backplane connectors, then secure the front panel thumbscrews.
  • Transducer Field Wiring: Route incoming sensor signal lines through dedicated, isolated instrumentation conduits. Terminate leads onto the companion rear-mounted I/O terminal head assembly.
  • Electrostatic Grounding: Maintain continuous attachment to an approved electrostatic discharge wrist strap during unboxing or modification routines to safeguard internal analog processing chips.
  • Shield Continuity Management: Land input cable shield drain wires onto the dedicated shield terminals provided on the I/O block, keeping the sensor end ungrounded to eliminate standard ground loop noise induction.

3500/42 vs. 3500/42M: Key Differences & Selection Guide

When managing legacy machinery protection legacy networks or sourcing replacement parts for the Bently Nevada 3500 system, understanding the technical boundary lines between the standard 3500/42 and the enhanced 3500/42M (Multimode) Proximitor/Seismic Monitor is critical for plant compatibility.

Architectural Comparison

Feature / Specification Legacy 3500/42 Monitor Enhanced 3500/42M Monitor
Hardware Generation Early baseline production series Later generation Multimode series (Current OEM standard)
Channel Programming Functionally restricted per channel pair via physical onboard hardware jumpers Fully software-configurable per channel via 3500 Rack Configuration Software
Mixed Sensor Inputs Limited flexibility; channels must match specific jumper groups High flexibility; allows concurrent pairing of proximity and seismic sensors within one card
Advanced Signal Processing Standard vibration, thrust position, and casing velocity tracking Supports advanced algorithms including REBAM®, Shaft Absolute, and Circular Acceptance Region
Compatible Rear I/O Cards 140471-01 (Internal) / 140482-01 (External) 128229-01 (Internal) / 128240-01 (External)

Selection and Backward Compatibility Rules

  • Direct Legacy Replacement: If your current rack contains an original 3500/42 main monitor card that has suffered hardware degradation, the newer 3500/42M can function as a complete functional replacement. It is fully backwards compatible with the overall 3500 chassis backplane communication bus.
  • The "Matched Pair" Mandatory Rule: You cannot plug a 3500/42M front monitor card into an older 3500/42 rear I/O module (and vice versa). The internal trace layouts and electrical pinning paths are distinct. If you choose to upgrade a legacy slot to the 42M series, you must purchase and replace both the Front Monitor Card and the Rear I/O Module as a matched set.
  • Configuration Redeployment: When replacing an old 3500/42 with a 3500/42M hardware bundle, field technicians must connect via the 3500 Rack Configuration Software, modify the designated slot definition type to "3500/42M", map the original transducer metrics, and perform a fresh logic download to activate the slot.

Technical Datasheet

Bently Nevada 3500/42 Proximitor® Seismic Monitor Module

What primary indication do the front-panel coaxial connectors provide on the module?

The front-panel coaxial connectors supply unconditioned, buffered transducer signals for each channel, allowing field technicians to attach diagnostic oscilloscopes or wave analyzers without interfering with system protection loops.

What does a lit BYPASS LED imply about the operational status of the monitor?

The BYPASS LED indicates that user-configured safety interlocks, channel functions, or alarm trip configurations have been intentionally or systemically suppressed during testing or active maintenance cycles.

Does a short circuit on the recorder outputs interrupt the primary monitoring logic?

No. The circuit design isolates the processing matrix from peripheral faults, ensuring that short circuits across the recorder outputs leave core monitoring and alarm operations entirely unaffected.
