Replacing ABB DSQC 351: Controller and Network Checks

Checks to record before replacing ABB 3HNE 00006-1 DSQC 351: controller generation, X3/X5/X20/X21 wiring, DeviceNet settings, INTERBUS mapping, and LED states.

ABB order code 3HNE 00006-1 identifies the DSQC 351 DeviceNet/INTERBUS gateway. ABB’s aftersales catalogue lists it as an INTERBUS-S slave in the S4Cplus M2000 controller section. That matters during a replacement: the board number alone does not prove that an IRC5-era controller, configuration file, or spare is compatible.

Before removing the board, record the controller generation, board designation, network settings, and cable positions. The replacement task is a configuration transfer, not only a hardware swap.

Confirm the Part and Controller

  • Read the board label and confirm 3HNE 00006-1.
  • Record whether the label says DSQC 351 or DSQC 351B.
  • Confirm the robot controller family from its cabinet documentation.
  • Do not use an IRC5 reference as proof of compatibility with an S4Cplus installation.

The PLC ProTech DSQC 351 product page identifies the stocked order code and connector layout.

Record the Four Connectors

ABB’s DeviceNet application manual assigns the DSQC 351 connectors as follows:

  • X3: external 24 VDC backup supply
  • X5: DeviceNet
  • X20: INTERBUS input
  • X21: INTERBUS output

Photograph the board before disconnecting anything. Label the X20 and X21 cables. Reversing the INTERBUS direction will stop downstream communication even when the board powers up.

Protect the INTERBUS Chain

ABB states that the gateway needs an external 24 VDC supply at X3. This prevents the INTERBUS network from dropping when a robot cell is switched off. Check this supply before blaming the replacement board.

The X21 output connector also carries the chain-continuation link. ABB specifies a link between pins 5 and 9 when another device follows the gateway. The last device does not use that downstream cable. Capture the existing termination and link arrangement before the swap.

Save Network Parameters

Record the DeviceNet node address and the configured data width. ABB documents a fixed DeviceNet rate of 500 kbit/s for this device. The DataWidth setting controls the input and output image size. A changed width shifts the data map seen by the INTERBUS master.

Also save the INTERBUS master entry. ABB specifies device ID 3; the length code depends on the configured data width. Do not recreate these values from memory after installation.

Use the LEDs in Sequence

After power-up, check the 24 V and 5 V indicators first. Then check the INTERBUS indicators:

  • BA: INTERBUS is active.
  • RC: INTERBUS communication is running without errors.
  • RBDA: indicates the final station state.

If the 24 V indicator is off, measure X3 before replacing the board again. If BA or RC stays off, inspect the X20/X21 direction, downstream link, master configuration, and recorded network parameters.

Commissioning Record

Keep the original photographs, controller backup, node address, DataWidth value, INTERBUS master entry, and LED results with the maintenance record. These details separate a failed board from a wiring or configuration error.
