Troubleshooting Beckhoff KL1512 Counter Inputs and Mapping

A field checklist for KL1512 signal thresholds, counter direction, process data and the KL1512-to-KS1512 wiring difference.

The Beckhoff KL1512 is a 24 V DC K-bus counter terminal. It supports one or two counters, 16-bit counter depth and pulse frequencies up to 1 kHz.

If the count stays at zero or changes in the wrong direction, check the input signal and terminal mapping before replacing the module.

Check the physical input level

KL1512 uses EN 61131-2 type 1 inputs. Beckhoff specifies:

  • Signal 0: -3 to +5 V DC
  • Signal 1: 15 to 30 V DC
  • Input current: typically 5 mA

Measure the pulse at the terminal. A sensor output below 15 V may switch an indicator elsewhere but still fail the KL1512 input threshold.

Confirm the input LED follows the pulse

The input LEDs show the physical signal states. If the PLC value does not change but the LED does, move the diagnosis to process-data mapping and control bits.

If the LED does not change, check field power, sensor common, polarity and pulse width.

Check counter direction

The terminal can count up or down. Beckhoff documents down counting through the terminal configuration and the control/status data.

Record the control byte before changing hardware. A retained down-count setting can make a replacement appear faulty.

Verify process-data mapping

The published process image is 16-bit counter data plus an 8-bit control/status field. Mapping can vary with the Bus Coupler and its selected data format.

Compare the configured terminal entry with the physical slot. Then verify that the application reads the correct data word and control/status byte.

Distinguish KL1512 from KS1512

KL1512 uses the standard Bus Terminal wiring level. KS1512 provides a pluggable wiring level. Their counter function is similar, but the field connection is not the same.

Replacement check

  • Match the KL1512 order code and physical slot.
  • Confirm 24 V DC type 1 input levels.
  • Verify the input LED for each pulse channel.
  • Check up/down configuration and control bits.
  • Confirm the 16-bit data and 8-bit control/status mapping.
  • Keep the input frequency at or below 1 kHz.

See the Beckhoff KL1512 product page for the verified terminal specifications.
