IC697PWR710 Replacement Checks: Load Budget and Dual-Rack Limits

A field-focused IC697PWR710 replacement guide covering 5 V load calculations, dual-rack limits, extension cables, input checks, protection behavior and hardware revision risks.

Replacing a GE Fanuc Series 90-70 power supply is not only a catalog-number exercise. The rack load, input wiring, hardware revision, and any second-rack connection all affect the result. These checks matter when evaluating an installed IC697PWR710 power supply or preparing a spare.

What the IC697PWR710 supplies

The IC697PWR710 is a 55 W rack power supply for the Series 90-70 platform. GE rated its input for 120/240 VAC or 125 VDC. The documented operating range is 90–264 VAC at 47–63 Hz, or 100–150 VDC.

The supply produces a nominal 5.1 VDC for the backplane. Its specified output range is 4.90–5.25 VDC, with an 11 A maximum current rating. Input power can reach 90 W at full load. GE also specified a power factor above 0.95 and a typical half-cycle inrush of 3 A.

This output arrangement is a key replacement boundary. A physically similar Series 90-70 supply may provide different rails or capacity. For example, the IC697PWR711 must not be treated as interchangeable without checking the rack requirements.

Build the 5 V load budget before removal

The IC697PWR710 has an 11 A output limit. Count the actual backplane current for every installed module. Do not rely on rack size or module count alone. Two modules with similar front panels can have different current demands.

Use the revision-specific datasheet for each module. Record the value before the outage. If the rack includes high-current output modules, verify their backplane demand separately from field-load current. The field load does not necessarily pass through the rack supply.

A module such as the IC697MDL940 relay output module illustrates this distinction. Its relay loads use external field power, while the module electronics still consume backplane power. The replacement calculation must include the latter.

Dual-rack operation has four conditions

GE documented a two-rack arrangement for the IC697PWR710. That option has limits:

  • The second rack must require only the 5 VDC backplane output.
  • The total load of both racks must remain within the supply rating.
  • The second rack must draw no more than 5.2 A.
  • The rack-to-rack cable must remain within the three-foot limit.

GE listed IC697CBL700 and IC697CBL713 cables for this connection. The cable carries power and sequencing signals. It does not extend Series 90-70 bus communications. A second rack still needs the appropriate communication arrangement for its installed modules.

Before reusing an extension cable, inspect both connectors and the cable jacket. Confirm the exact cable number. A power-extension cable should not be substituted by appearance.

Check input wiring and grounding

The supply accepts a broad AC range, but the existing terminals still require careful verification. Record whether the installation uses AC or DC. For DC input, confirm polarity before energizing the rack. Retain the protective-earth connection and the conductor sizes specified by GE.

The power supply occupies the leftmost rack position and connects through a 48-pin backplane connector. Inspect the connector for heat discoloration, damaged contacts, or contamination. A replacement supply cannot correct a degraded backplane connection.

Lock out the rack before removal. Photograph the terminal arrangement and label each conductor. This creates a wiring record even when the original project drawings are incomplete.

Protection and ride-through depend on revision

GE specified typical overvoltage protection at 6.2 V and typical current limiting at 12 A. These values describe protective behavior, not a normal operating target. A rack that approaches the limit needs a corrected load budget.

For hardware versions D and later, GE documented at least 21 ms of full-load ride-through. Do not apply that figure automatically to an earlier unit. Record the installed revision and compare it with the applicable manual.

Ride-through also does not replace an upstream power-quality review. Repeated rack resets can indicate input interruptions, loose terminals, overloaded output, or a failing supply. Check the input event and the backplane load before assigning the fault.

Procurement and outage checklist

  • Record the full catalog number, revision, and connector condition.
  • Confirm the input source, terminal wiring, and protective earth.
  • Total the documented 5 VDC backplane current for every module.
  • For two racks, verify the 5.2 A second-rack limit and cable number.
  • Check whether the application needs output rails absent from IC697PWR710.
  • Keep the removed supply until the replacement passes a loaded restart.
