Allen-Bradley 1771-IG: TTL Logic and 5 V Wiring Checks

Check 1771-IG TTL HIGH/LOW logic thresholds, field supply ripple and 1771-WC wiring before replacing an input module.

When an Allen-Bradley 1771-IG stops reporting the expected input states, first distinguish the 5 V field supply from the TTL logic thresholds. The module has eight TTL inputs and can interpret its inputs in either HIGH=TRUE or LOW=TRUE mode. Incorrect logic selection or a marginal customer-supplied 5 V rail can appear to be a failed I/O module.

Check the input logic selection

Logic selection Input reported ON Input reported OFF
HIGH = TRUE 2.4 to 5.25 VDC −0.2 to +0.8 VDC
LOW = TRUE −0.2 to +0.8 VDC 2.4 to 5.25 VDC

These thresholds come from Rockwell's 1771-IG product data. A LOW=TRUE installation deliberately interprets the low voltage state as true; do not assume an input image bit should always follow the positive voltage state.

Check the customer-side 5 V supply

The published field supply requirement is 5 VDC (+0.25 V), with 50 mV peak-to-peak ripple maximum. The document lists a maximum customer supply current of 500 mA per module. This is separate from the 122 mA maximum current drawn from the 1771 backplane. Confusing these two current specifications can lead to incorrect power-budget calculations.

Inspect field wiring and chassis conditions

The 1771-IG is specified for Series A or B 1771 I/O chassis. Record the module's series, slot, selected logic mode and existing I/O address before exchanging hardware. Check field terminations at the 1771-WC wiring arm and confirm the input source uses TTL levels rather than 24 VDC discrete outputs.

Rockwell records an input signal delay below 1 ms and 1,500 VAC rms isolation between field inputs and the backplane. These figures describe the module; they do not replace plant isolation and electrical safety procedures.

Before ordering a replacement

  • Match the full 1771-IG catalog number and installed module series.
  • Record HIGH=TRUE or LOW=TRUE selection and measure the actual ON/OFF voltage at the field terminals.
  • Verify 5 V field supply stability, wiring-arm condition and chassis backplane budget.
  • Confirm the controller program's input mapping before changing the module.

See the Allen-Bradley 1771-IG product page for catalog information. The technical levels above are drawn from Rockwell Automation Publication 1771-2.180, TTL Input Module specifications.
