Replacing a 1761-NET-DNI: Capture These Settings First
A field checklist for recording the 1761-NET-DNI hardware series, firmware, EDS file, DF1 settings, DeviceNet address and messaging configuration before replacement.
The Allen-Bradley 1761-NET-DNI links DF1 serial devices to a DeviceNet network. Replacement work starts with its configured role, not its connector count.
Rockwell Automation lists the Series B unit as discontinued. A separate Rockwell support note states that there is no direct replacement. That makes configuration capture part of the procurement task.
Identify the installed network role
Record every device connected to the RS-232 port and DeviceNet connector. Note which controller initiates messages and which device owns the I/O connection.
Do not treat every DeviceNet module as interchangeable. The 1761-NET-DNI product record describes an interface between DF1 and DeviceNet. A scanner module has a different network role.
Capture before removing power
- Catalog number, hardware series, firmware revision and terminal labels
- DeviceNet node address and network data rate
- DF1 mode, baud rate, parity, station address and error checking
- Input and output split-point values
- DF1 substitution address, if used
- EDS filename and revision registered in the engineering workstation
- Explicit-message definitions and assembly mapping
- Cable part numbers, pinouts, shields and external power connections
Photograph the front label and every connector before disassembly. Export the controller project and the DeviceNet configuration from the original workstation.
Check the EDS and firmware pairing
The stored product data distinguishes EDS files by firmware revision. Confirm the installed FRN before selecting an EDS file.
An EDS mismatch can change how configuration parameters appear. Keep the original EDS file with the project archive.
Separate interface replacement from scanner migration
The 1747-SDN is a DeviceNet scanner for an SLC 500 chassis. It is not a drop-in substitute for the 1761-NET-DNI.
If the replacement architecture uses a scanner, document the required controller, chassis slot, DeviceNet scan list and program changes. Treat that work as a migration.
Bench test before site installation
- Restore the captured serial and DeviceNet settings.
- Verify node detection with the intended EDS file.
- Test every cyclic I/O connection.
- Test each explicit message and its timeout behavior.
- Confirm power-up order and recovery after a network interruption.
- Archive the tested files, screenshots and cable schedule.
