Replacing a 1769-OW8: Checks Before Moving Relay Loads

A field checklist for replacing Allen-Bradley 1769-OW8 relay output modules without losing load-group, wiring, and commissioning details.

The Allen-Bradley 1769-OW8 is an eight-point AC/DC relay output module in the Compact I/O family. Rockwell lists the catalog as Active Mature. A like-for-like cabinet replacement still requires wiring and load checks.

Confirm the Catalog Number

Match 1769-OW8 on the installed module, spare, bill of materials, and project file. Do not substitute a module based only on point count.

Map the Two Load Groups

The field wiring is divided into two AC/DC load groups. Record each group common and every switched conductor before removal. A misplaced common can affect several outputs.

Check the Load

Confirm voltage type, steady current, inrush, switching frequency, inductive suppression, and fuse arrangement against the current Rockwell limits. Steady current alone does not define a suitable relay load.

Verify the Compact I/O Assembly

Check adjacent module order, bus connection, terminal block, keying, enclosure clearance, and the controller’s supported I/O configuration. Compare the installed series and revision with the project record.

Commission in a Controlled State

  1. Have qualified personnel de-energize and verify the circuit.
  2. Photograph and label conductors before removal.
  3. Keep field loads isolated or in their approved safe state.
  4. Inspect commons and terminal torque against Rockwell instructions.
  5. Test outputs individually under the site commissioning procedure.
  6. Restore interlocks and automatic control only after the checks pass.
