Honeywell Launches Forge Plant Cognition at Dangote Refinery

Honeywell announced Forge Plant Cognition for Dangote's Lekki refinery on October 26, 2026. Its US$60m benefit figure is a preliminary, site-specific gross estimate.

Honeywell Technologies announced Forge Plant Cognition on October 26, 2026, naming Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria as the first deployment. The industrial AI platform combines plant operating data, Honeywell UOP process expertise, physics-based models, and AI technologies supplied through NVIDIA and Dell infrastructure.

The announcement is relevant to process automation teams because the proposed optimization layer depends on operating data and process context. It does not, by itself, announce a new DCS controller, universal interface module, or replacement part for an installed Honeywell system.

What Forge Plant Cognition is intended to do

Honeywell describes three main areas: identifying throughput and yield constraints, spotting developing equipment or process problems, and making expert process knowledge accessible to operations teams. The announced technology stack includes NVIDIA Nemotron models for agents, Omniverse libraries for digital twins, vision AI components, and Dell AI Factory infrastructure.

These are planned and announced capabilities. Site-wide performance, model accuracy and integrations for a specific plant must be established during implementation rather than inferred from the product announcement.

How to interpret the savings figure

Honeywell's preliminary estimate is more than US$0.29 per barrel of operational benefit at Lekki. At full-capacity throughput, Honeywell projects more than US$60 million per year in gross operational benefit. This is not a measured annual result or a guaranteed saving, and the stated gross figure excludes implementation costs. Actual outcomes depend on feedstock, utilization, operating baseline, process conditions, data quality and deployment details.

Practical checks for OT teams

  • Data access: Identify which historians, control systems and maintenance sources provide the operating context, and validate tag mapping and timestamps.
  • Model boundaries: Document where AI recommendations stop and existing control-system interlocks, operating procedures and approval controls remain authoritative.
  • Change management: Verify audit trails, cybersecurity access rules, model-validation requirements and rollback plans before production use.
  • Lifecycle: Treat platform integration as a separate engineering project from the maintenance or replacement of installed PLC, DCS and safety hardware.

For legacy hardware procurement, see PLC ProTech's Honeywell product catalog. Product-level compatibility should still be determined from the exact installed part numbers.
