Description

Processing temperature signals within the Omron Sysmac platform is handled directly by the Omron NX-TS2202, a high-resolution resistance thermometer input module. Designed for precise thermal processing operations, this module supports two Pt100 three-wire RTD input channels with a fast conversion time of 10 ms per unit and a maximum resolution of 0.01 degC. The device features a space-saving 12 mm width and utilizes a 16-point screwless clamping terminal block, which significantly minimizes field installation time and eliminates terminal tightening maintenance. Highly robust, it offers comprehensive internal isolation using transformers for power and digital isolators for signals between the inputs and the NX backplane bus.

Features

  • Two independent input channels specialized for Pt100 three-wire resistance thermometers.
  • Rapid 10 ms conversion rate per unit to capture high-speed thermal fluctuations.
  • Ultra-precise temperature tracking with a resolution of 0.01 degC max.
  • Free-Run I/O refreshing mechanism ensuring low latency data delivery to the host controller.
  • Complete channel-to-channel and channel-to-bus electrical isolation via digital isolators and transformers.
  • Built-in TS status indicator for instant visual diagnosis of module health.
  • Push-in screwless clamp terminal block with 16 connection points for vibration-resistant wiring.

Applications

  • Precision multi-zone heating and cooling control in plastic extrusion machinery.
  • Real-time temperature logging and regulation in chemical batch reactors.
  • Thermal profiling and environmental monitoring inside cleanrooms and semiconductor processing chambers.
  • Sterilization, pasteurization, and packaging temperature loops in high-speed food processing plants.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The NX-TS2202 is optimized for Sysmac architectures and mounts on standard NX bus bases. While physically identical to thermocouple input modules like the NX-TS2101, the internal analog-to-digital front end of this module is dedicated strictly to resistive measurement. It requires standard Pt100 RTD curves; attempting to connect nickel (Ni) or other non-Pt standard RTDs will result in hardware-level range overflow faults in Sysmac Studio.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

To prevent measurement drift, ensure that the lead resistances of all three wires of the Pt100 sensor are perfectly matched. A resistance mismatch between the lines directly compromises the three-wire compensation algorithm, leading to systematic temperature calculation errors. The module accommodates up to 20 Ohms of conductor resistance, but asymmetric line impedances must be strictly avoided during cabling.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

Avoid using tinned wire leads with the push-in terminal blocks. Tinning can cause the wire to cold-flow over time, which loosens the physical spring connection. Instead, use high-quality insulated crimped ferrules or bare stranded conductors. Keep the sensor shielding terminated directly to a functional ground point close to the module base to shield the sensitive analog front-end from high-frequency industrial electromagnetic interference.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING:

Disconnect the power supply to the entire Sysmac rack and any field-side power sources before mounting or inserting/removing the NX-TS2202. Hot-plugging or live-wiring of sensor leads can induce high-voltage transients that degrade the module's precision digital isolation circuits.

1
Align the module side connectors with the adjacent NX unit on the DIN rail and slide the unit straight in until the plastic latch clicks into place.
2
Insert the Pt100 three-wire sensor leads into the designated terminal points. Depress the orange locking tabs to insert bare wire, or insert crimped ferrules directly into the terminal block.
3
Connect the sensor cable shields to a dedicated ground plate or the chassis functional ground. Do not daisy-chain analog shield grounds with high-power motor grounds.
4
Power on the controller rack. Verify that the unit TS indicator glows solid green. Perform hardware configuration and sensor scaling configurations inside Sysmac Studio.

What type of temperature sensors are compatible with the NX-TS2202?

The module is designed specifically for standard Pt100 three-wire resistance thermometers. It cannot be used with thermocouples or two-wire RTDs without custom jumpering.

What is the update or conversion speed of the input channels?

The module features a conversion time of 10 ms per unit, making it suitable for applications that require fast temperature measurements.

Does the unit require an external power supply?

No external I/O power supply is required. Power for the internal circuitry is drawn directly from the NX Unit power supply line via the backplane bus.

What happens if there is an unequal wire length in the Pt100 connection?

Unequal wire lengths cause mismatched wire resistances, which disrupts the internal 3-wire compensation circuitry. This leads to a static offset error in the temperature measurement.
