Siemens Adds Skeleton Supercapacitors to Data Center Power Portfolio

Siemens will integrate Skeleton supercapacitors into its data-center electrical portfolio to manage rapid power swings and support AC retrofits.

Siemens announced on 14 October 2026 that it is making a strategic investment in Skeleton Technologies and forming an exclusive sales partnership. Siemens plans to add Skeleton's supercapacitor systems to its electrical infrastructure portfolio for data centers.

What Siemens announced

The companies are targeting rapid, repeated changes in data-center power demand. Siemens says synchronized AI workloads can shift power demand within milliseconds and create megawatt-scale swings within seconds.

The planned offering will use supercapacitors to absorb and release power during these short transients. Siemens states that the system can be added to existing AC architectures and retrofit projects, with a path toward future 800 V DC systems.

Engineering impact

This is a power-quality and distribution problem, not a substitute for all backup power. Engineers still need separate decisions for ride-through duration, UPS capacity, generator start time, protection coordination, and thermal limits.

  • Measure the site's transient power profile instead of using only steady-state nameplate load.
  • Define where supercapacitor telemetry enters the facility control system.
  • Coordinate protection settings with the converter and upstream distribution equipment.
  • Check space, cooling, maintenance isolation, and retrofit shutdown requirements.
  • Keep the AC retrofit design separate from any later 800 V DC migration plan.

The announcement follows other Siemens projects that join real-time plant data with operational software, including the company's GalpH2Park digital-twin project. For controller hardware, see the Siemens S7-200 CPU 226 listing.
