Description

ABB RED670 is a line differential protection relay designed for the protection, control, and monitoring of overhead lines and cables in distribution and high-voltage transmission networks. The device delivers phase-segregated current differential protection for heavily loaded lines, multi-terminal configurations, and cable feeders connected to generator block transformers. It supports up to six stabilized current inputs per phase to accommodate multi-breaker arrangements across three to five terminal applications.

The ABB RED670 incorporates charging current compensation to maintain high sensitivity on long overhead lines and underground cables. Inter-IED communication for differential schemes operates via the IEEE C37.94 standard with optional dual-channel redundancy. To ensure uninterrupted protection during differential communication channel outages, the relay features fully independent full-scheme distance protection with quadrilateral and mho characteristics. Additional integrated functions include single-, two-, and three-phase auto-reclosing, synchrocheck, breaker failure protection, disturbance recording, and fault location.

Features

  • Phase-segregated line differential protection with charging current compensation for two to five line terminals
  • Full-scheme line distance protection with selectable quadrilateral and mho characteristics across six independent zones
  • Support for IEEE C37.94 optical communication interfaces with redundant channel capabilities
  • Dual-bias differential slope evaluation with unrestrained instantaneous high-differential tripping
  • Integrated transformer in-zone differential protection with 2nd and 5th harmonic restraint
  • Auto-reclosing functionality for single-, two-, and three-phase tripping with integrated synchrocheck logic
  • Thermal overload, directional overcurrent, undervoltage, overvoltage, and breaker failure backup protection
  • Support for IEC 61850-9-2LE process bus interfacing with up to six Merging Units (MU)

Applications

  • Transmission and distribution overhead line protection
  • Underground cable feeder protection
  • Multi-terminal lines and multi-breaker arrangements (one-and-a-half breaker and ring busbar systems)
  • Cable feeders connecting to generator block transformers
  • T-feeder and line reactor protection using high-impedance differential functions

Installation Guidelines

  • Grounding: Connect the terminal server earth pin directly to the main station grounding bar using short, low-impedance grounding strips.
  • Shielding: Ensure all binary I/O, CT/VT analog connections, and communication cables utilize shielded wiring grounded according to substation standards.
  • Optical Interfacing: Route IEEE C37.94 optical fiber cables within dedicated conduit or trays to maintain minimum bending radiuses and prevent mechanical stress.
  • CT Circuit Wiring: Verify secondary CT circuits are shorted prior to disconnecting or servicing terminal blocks to prevent lethal overvoltages.
  • Cooling and Ventilation: Maintain clear vertical airflow clearance above and below the panel-mounted enclosure for thermal dissipation.
