Product Description

Description

The BECKHOFF EP6228-3032 is an IP67-rated industrial EtherCAT Box that serves as an 8-channel IO-Link master. Designed for decentralized control architectures without a control cabinet, this module allows direct integration of up to eight IO-Link devices, such as sensors, actuators, and pneumatic valve terminals, into the EtherCAT communication network.

Operating as a Class B master, the module provides an additional, electrically isolated power supply (P24) specifically for actuators, supplementing the standard sensor supply. This configuration makes it highly suitable for higher-draw field devices. Power connection and loop-through are achieved using standardized 7/8-inch power connectors, which simplify downstream daisy-chaining in the field.

The physical design is robust and completely sealed, achieving an IP65, IP66, or IP67 ingress protection rating. It is designed to operate under harsh mechanical and environmental conditions, mounting directly onto machinery to optimize wiring topology and reduce terminal cabinet space.

Features

  • 8 independent IO-Link Class B interfaces via M12 connection technology
  • Full compatibility with IO-Link Specification V1.1
  • Supports standard data transfer rates of 4.8 kbaud (COM1), 38.4 kbaud (COM2), and 230.4 kbaud (COM3)
  • High-capacity Class B port configuration providing both L+ sensor power and additional P24 actuator power
  • Integrated 7/8-inch power connection (5-pin) with feed and downstream loop-through ports
  • Dual M8 shielded screw-type connectors for EtherCAT bus network interface
  • Robust IP65/66/67 design for cabinet-free field deployment

Applications

  • Decentralized machine-mount automation architectures requiring direct field bus connection
  • Control of IO-Link actuators and valve blocks requiring auxiliary Class B power
  • Harsh manufacturing environments prone to dust, moisture, or liquid splashdown
  • Intralogistics and conveyor systems with distributed sensor networks

Installation Guidelines

  1. Ensure that all field power supplies and network lines are fully de-energized before beginning physical installation.
  2. Mount the module securely to a flat, rigid machine framework using the integrated mounting holes. Do not over-torque the mounting screws.
  3. Verify that all connecting M12, M8, and 7/8" cabling connectors are clean, dry, and undamaged.
  4. Connect the EtherCAT communication cables to the shielded M8 input and output sockets, ensuring the threaded collars are tightened firmly to maintain the IP rating.
  5. Apply the 24 V DC power feed to the 7/8" plug, and loop downstream to subsequent modules if applicable.
  6. Fit any unused ports with correct, thread-matching protective caps to guarantee the unit remains sealed against dust and moisture ingress.

Replacement Recommendations

  1. Document the port configuration, terminal network layout, and the device mapping of the existing module before starting removal.
  2. De-energize the system completely, including any external actuator supply lines connected to the Class B ports.
  3. Disconnect all network, power, and I/O cabling from the module.
  4. Remove the faulty module and replace it with the new unit in the same mounting location.
  5. Re-engage all cables, verifying the correct channel assignments and ensuring proper seal tightness on the M12 and M8 connectors.
  6. Power up the system and confirm proper fieldbus communication status via the network LED indicators.
