Product Overview

The EPP2308-0001 (EPP23080001) is a ruggedized EtherCAT P Box designed for decentralized machine-mount applications where space and wiring efficiency are critical. By utilizing the EtherCAT P technology, this module combines ultra-fast communication and power (both system and peripheral voltage) into a single M8 P-coded cable. This "One Cable Automation" solution is ideal for high-performance robotics, modular production lines, and material handling systems where IP67 protection is required without the use of a control cabinet. The EPP2308-0001 features 4 digital inputs and 4 digital outputs, providing a versatile interface for sensors and actuators directly at the point of application, significantly reducing cabling overhead and potential points of failure in harsh industrial environments.

Technical Configuration

The EPP2308-0001 is equipped with two M8 P-coded sockets for the EtherCAT P bus interface, supporting a line topology with efficient power forwarding. It provides 4 digital inputs with a 3.0 ms filter to ensure signal stability against electromagnetic noise and 4 short-circuit-proof digital outputs rated at 0.5 A. The module adheres to EN 61131-2 Type 1/3 specifications, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of industrial sensors. For field connections, it utilizes 3-pin M8 A-coded sockets. The unit is fully encapsulated, achieving an IP67 protection rating, which allows it to operate in temperatures ranging from -25 to +60 deg C while resisting vibration and shock in accordance with EN 60068 standards.

Technical FAQs

What is the advantage of EtherCAT P over standard EtherCAT for this module?

EtherCAT P integrates the EtherCAT communication and two separate 24 VDC power supplies (Us for electronics/sensors and Up for peripheral loads) into a single 4-wire cable. This eliminates the need for separate power cables, simplifies the mechanical design of the machine, and reduces the weight of cable carriers.

How is the sensor supply handled in the EPP2308-0001?

The sensors connected to the inputs are supplied from the control voltage (Us) provided via the EtherCAT P cable. The supply is short-circuit proof with a maximum total current of 0.5 A, protecting the internal electronics and the rest of the EtherCAT P segment from localized wiring faults at the sensor level.

Can I mix ohmic and inductive loads on the outputs?

Yes. The digital outputs are designed to handle ohmic, inductive, and lamp loads. With a typical switching time (TON) of 50 µs, they are suitable for high-speed industrial tasks. For highly inductive loads, the internal protection handles the energy dissipation, though external suppression is always a good practice for very large solenoids.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • M8 Connector Torque: To maintain the IP67 protection rating, all M8 connectors must be tightened to the manufacturer-specified torque (typically 0.4 Nm). Hand-tightening is often insufficient to prevent moisture ingress over time, especially in wash-down environments or areas with high vibration.

  • EtherCAT P Segment Planning: When daisy-chaining multiple EPP modules, calculate the total current draw for both Us and Up. Ensure the total current does not exceed the capacity of the P-coded cable or the supply limit of the EKP1100 coupler. Voltage drop over long distances should also be considered to ensure the last box in the segment receives at least 20.4 VDC.

  • Shielding and Grounding: The M8 sockets are shielded. For optimal EMC performance and to prevent data corruption, use only shielded M8 P-coded cables. Ensure the mounting surface of the EPP2308-0001 is connected to the machine's functional earth if the application involves high-frequency switching or high electromagnetic interference.
