Product Overview

The EPP2308-0002 (EPP23080002) is a versatile, machine-mountable I/O module designed for decentralized automation environments. Utilizing EtherCAT P technology, this unit integrates high-speed data communication and two separate 24 VDC power circuits into a single M8 P-coded cable. In advanced manufacturing, logistics, and robotic cells, the EPP2308-0002 allows for the direct connection of four digital inputs and four digital outputs at the field level. This variant is specifically equipped with M12 A-coded 5-pin connections, facilitating the use of standard industrial sensor/actuator cables. With its IP67 protection rating and ruggedized design, the EPP2308-0002 eliminates the need for terminal boxes and complex cable management, driving the transition toward "One Cable Automation."

Technical Configuration

The EPP2308-0001 features two M8 P-coded bus interfaces for the EtherCAT P line and four M12 sockets for I/O signals. Each M12 socket typically carries two channels, maximizing the density of the compact housing. The inputs comply with EN 61131-2 Type 3 standards, featuring a 3.0 ms filter to ensure signal reliability in electrically noisy environments. The four digital outputs provide up to 0.5 A each and are fully short-circuit proof, capable of driving ohmic, inductive, and lamp loads. The sensor supply is derived directly from the control voltage (Us) with a 0.5 A total capacity, ensuring that field devices are powered safely without requiring auxiliary distribution blocks.

Technical FAQs

How do the M12 connections differ from the EPP2308-0001 variant?

The EPP2308-0002 uses M12 5-pin connectors instead of M8 connectors. This allows for the use of standard M12 cables, which are often preferred in heavy-duty mechanical engineering. Additionally, since the M12 sockets are 5-pin, each socket can be configured to carry multiple signals (e.g., two inputs or an input/output pair) depending on the internal pin mapping.

Can this module handle high-speed switching for inductive loads?

Yes, with a typical TON of 50 µs and TOFF of 100 µs, the outputs are highly responsive. The module includes internal protection for inductive loads. For very large solenoids or high-frequency cycling, ensure the breaking energy does not exceed the internal thermal limits to prevent premature component aging.

What is the "Us" current consumption used for?

The "Us" (System and Sensor Power) provides the 24 VDC for the internal logic of the box and the power for the sensors connected to the inputs. In an EtherCAT P segment, this is separate from the "Up" (Peripheral Power), which typically powers the output loads.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • M12 Connector Sealing: To maintain IP67 integrity, ensure that all M12 sockets are either fitted with a cable or a protective screw-cap. Tighten the M12 connectors to a torque of 0.6 Nm. Under-tightening is a common cause of moisture ingress in high-humidity or wash-down environments.

  • EtherCAT P Power Management: When daisy-chaining multiple EPP modules, calculate the cumulative current draw for both Us and Up. The P-coded M8 cable has a maximum current capacity of 3 A. If your segment exceeds this, an intermediate EPP9001 or EPP9022 feed-in module must be used.

  • Mounting and Vibration: The EPP2308-0002 is designed to withstand significant shock and vibration (EN 60068-2-6/27). For maximum stability, mount the box to a flat, rigid machine surface using both fixing holes. Ensure the EtherCAT P cables are secured with strain relief near the box to prevent mechanical stress on the M8 bus sockets.
