Description

Designed to expand the local control capacity of MELSEC iQ-F series programmable controllers, the FX5-32ET/ES extension block provides integrated power supply capabilities alongside high-density digital I/O interfaces. This powered extension module features a built-in AC power supply, which significantly reduces the current draw on the host CPU module's internal 5V DC and 24V DC buses, enabling complex system expansion without requiring additional power booster units.

The unit occupies 32 I/O points on the active PLC backplane, split evenly between inputs and outputs. The input stage contains 16 points configurable for either sink or source wiring configurations, while the output stage consists of 16 low-latency transistor outputs in a sink configuration, making it suitable for high-speed switching and interfacing with solid-state control components.

Features

  • Equipped with an onboard 100 to 240 V AC power supply to power downstream extension modules and field devices.
  • Provides 32 local digital I/O points (16 digital inputs and 16 transistor outputs) in a single compact enclosure.
  • Flexible digital inputs compatible with both 24 V DC sink and source signal wiring.
  • Reliable transistor outputs (sink type) designed for rapid duty cycles and maintenance-free solid-state switching.
  • Removable terminal blocks simplify installation, wiring, and routine system maintenance.
  • Direct connection to the FX5U CPU module or preceding expansion blocks via the integrated extension cable.

Applications

  • Automated assembly lines and material handling conveyor systems.
  • Packaging, wrapping, and labeling machinery.
  • Water and wastewater treatment control panels.
  • HVAC and environmental control cabinets.
  • Multi-axis motion control and positioning system expansions.

Installation Guidelines

  • Mounting: Mount the module on a standard 35 mm DIN rail or secure directly to a flat panel using the integrated mounting screw holes.
  • Spacing: Maintain a minimum clearance of 50 mm above and below the unit to promote natural convection cooling and prevent thermal stress.
  • Grounding: Connect the Protective Earth (PE) terminal to a dedicated ground point using a wire with a minimum cross-section of 2 mm squared. Ground resistance must be 100 Ohms or less.
  • Wiring: Use crimp terminals designed for M3 terminal screws. Tighten terminal screws to a torque spec of 0.5 to 0.8 N-m to prevent contact resistance or damage.

What is the primary function of the FX5-32ET/ES powered I/O module?

The FX5-32ET/ES expands the physical I/O capacity of a MELSEC iQ-F PLC system by 32 channels. Because it has an onboard AC power supply, it powers its own I/O channels and can supply auxiliary power to sensors, reducing the power load on the main CPU module.

Are the input terminals on the FX5-32ET/ES configurable for both NPN and PNP devices?

Yes. The 16 digital inputs feature a sink/source common terminal (S/S), allowing you to configure the module for either sink (NPN) or source (PNP) wiring.

What output type is used in the FX5-32ET/ES module?

This module is equipped with 16 transistor outputs in a sink configuration, making them suitable for high-speed, high-cycle switching of DC loads.

Can I use the auxiliary 24V DC terminal on this module to power external field devices?

Yes, the module provides a 24V DC service power output terminal with a maximum capacity of 310 mA to power local sensors and input switches.
