Description

Designed to expand the thermal monitoring capabilities of CP1 Series PLC systems, the Omron CP1W-TS003 provides high-accuracy analog temperature measurement interface options directly to the controller backplane. This expansion module enables seamless integration of external temperature sensors without requiring complex dedicated transmitters. The Omron CP1W-TS003 communicates natively with CP1H, CP1L, and CP1E CPU units, mapping raw sensor values directly into the PLC memory map for immediate processing within your ladder logic. Featuring a compact form factor, it minimizes DIN rail footprint while delivering robust, low-noise analog performance in challenging industrial environments.

Features

  • Provides 2 dedicated analog input channels specifically optimized for industrial temperature monitoring.
  • Features high-precision 12-bit analog-to-digital conversion for reliable process variable resolution.
  • Enables fast hardware integration with native PLC backplane communication, eliminating external network configuration.
  • Compact 50 mm width allows for high-density cabinet panel design.
  • Direct status LED indicators on the front panel display unit health and communication status.

Applications

  • Plastic extrusion and injection molding thermal control loops.
  • Industrial heat-treatment ovens and curing furnaces.
  • Packaging machinery sealing-jaw temperature regulation.
  • Food processing pasteurization and environmental chamber logging.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The CP1W-TS003 is explicitly designed for CP-series platforms. If you are migrating an older system from the CQM1 or CPM2A platforms to the CP1 family, note that older expansion modules cannot be connected to CP1 CPUs. Always ensure that the total current draw of this module along with other connected CP1W expansion units does not exceed the internal 5V or 24V power supply limitations of your specific CP1 PLC CPU.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

To maintain the integrity of the 12-bit analog conversions, shield the sensor lines carefully. Avoid routing thermocouple extension wiring in the same conduit or wire duct as high-voltage AC cables, variable frequency drive output cables, or lines feeding inductive loads. Electrostatic and magnetic interference in close proximity can induce voltage spikes, causing temperature value jitter in the PLC memory registers.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

During initial configuration in CX-Programmer, you must configure the allocated I/O memory words according to the CP1 system manual. Ensure that unused channels are disabled in software or shorted at the terminal block to prevent open-circuit alarms or continuous conversion errors. Always use the specified thermocouple compensation cables for extension wiring to prevent measurement offsets caused by cold-junction mismatch.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING

Disconnect all primary and auxiliary power supplies feeding the PLC rack and the expansion unit before mounting, removing, or wiring the module. Failure to de-energize the entire system can cause hardware damage, processor memory faults, or hazardous electrical shock.

1

Ensure the CPU Unit is securely mounted on the DIN rail. Pivot the expansion module onto the DIN rail to the right of the CPU or preceding expansion unit.

2

Slide the expansion unit flat against the adjacent CPU unit, then firmly press the connection bus cable into the CPU expansion connector until it locks.

3

Connect the sensor shielding directly to the panel functional ground terminal. Do not connect sensor shields to the active terminal block of the module itself.

Which PLCs are compatible with the CP1W-TS003?

This unit is compatible with Omron CP1H, CP1L, and CP1E PLC series controllers.

Does the CP1W-TS003 require an external power supply?

No external 24 VDC control power is required. The unit derives its operational power directly from the CP1 PLC expansion bus.

What is the conversion resolution of the analog inputs?

The module features a high-precision 12-bit analog-to-digital converter for high resolution tracking.

How are unused channels handled to prevent error indications?

Unused input channels can either be disabled in the CX-Programmer PLC hardware settings or short-circuited physically at the terminal block to suppress open-wire detection faults.
