The 6SE6400-4BE24-2FA0 is a high-performance braking resistor designed specifically for the MICROMASTER 4 series of AC drives. Its primary function is to dissipate the regenerative energy generated when an AC motor acts as a generator during deceleration or braking phases. With a high peak power rating of 84,000 W and a continuous load capacity of 4,200 W, this resistor provides a robust solution for large-scale industrial drives requiring frequent, high-inertia stops.

Features

  • Series: MICROMASTER 4 Accessory

Installation Guidelines

  • Ventilation: Due to the heat generated during the dissipation process, the braking resistor must be mounted in a well-ventilated area, preferably with upward airflow to ensure the heat dissipates away from the inverter and sensitive electronics.
  • Proximity: Keep the resistor as close as possible to the inverter’s braking module to minimize the length of high-power cabling, which reduces the potential for electromagnetic interference (EMI).
  • Clearance: Maintain the specified dimensions for mounting and ensure surrounding materials are flame-retardant, as the surface temperature of the resistor increases significantly during operation.
  • Safety: Connect the resistor to the dedicated braking terminals on the inverter or braking chopper module. Ensure that the circuit includes thermal protection—if the inverter software supports it, configure the resistor's thermal time constant to prevent overheating.

What happens to the kinetic energy during deceleration?

During motor deceleration, the kinetic energy of the load is converted back into electrical energy by the motor. This energy flows back to the drive's DC link; the braking resistor converts this excess electrical energy into heat to prevent DC link overvoltage.

Why is the continuous power rating lower than the peak power rating?

The peak power rating refers to the resistor's ability to handle short, intense bursts of energy, while the continuous power rating is the thermal limit the resistor can handle indefinitely without exceeding its safe operating temperature.

What is the importance of the 12 Ohm resistance value?

The resistance value is calculated to match the drive's internal braking chopper requirements. Using a resistor with the incorrect resistance can result in insufficient braking torque or damage to the braking chopper electronics.

Is active cooling required for this resistor?

While it is designed for passive heat dissipation via its housing, it must be mounted in a location with adequate airflow. If the installation environment is restricted, additional forced-air cooling may be necessary to maintain safe operating temperatures.
