Moving TwinCAT 3 Licenses with C9900-L100: Build and Device Checks

A TwinCAT license move can fail before the license itself is checked. The controller must recognize the C9900-L100 as a TwinCAT device, and the order code must match the licensing plan.

Check the TwinCAT build

Beckhoff documents USB access to the C9900-L100 from TwinCAT 3 build 4020. An older build should be treated as a compatibility issue before changing hardware.

Confirm the device description

The USB license key requires an XML description file for TwinCAT device management and the project tree. Supporting builds include the file. Otherwise, Beckhoff specifies this installation path:

C:\TwinCAT\3.1\Config\Io\Esb\

If the stick is visible to Windows but absent from the TwinCAT project tree, check this file before replacing the USB device.

Check the exact order code

• C9900-L100: supplied without activated licenses; licenses are activated by the customer.
• C9900-L100-0033: supplied with task-related licenses pre-activated.

Do not treat these order codes as interchangeable during a replacement or migration.
