Replacing a Beckhoff EL4032: Wiring and Output Checks
A field checklist for replacing a Beckhoff EL4032, covering the ±10 V load, terminal map, power contacts, EtherCAT state, and watchdog behavior.
The Beckhoff EL4032 is a two-channel EtherCAT terminal for -10 to +10 V analog outputs. Beckhoff specifies 12-bit resolution, a load above 5 kΩ, and a shared ground between channels.
A replacement can fit the DIN rail yet still produce no valid signal. The checks below isolate the common electrical and configuration causes.
Confirm the Order Code
Check the label before moving conductors. EL4032 uses the standard EL wiring level. ES4032 has the same basic output function but a pluggable wiring level.
The EL4032 product record should match the installed terminal and project configuration.

Measure the 24 V power contacts before testing the analog channels. The E-bus can communicate while the output stage lacks its field supply.
Verify the connected device presents more than 5 kΩ. A low-resistance load can pull the voltage down even though the output stage is short-circuit proof.
Terminal Map
- Terminal 1: Output 1
- Terminal 3: 0 V
- Terminal 4: Shield, functional earth
- Terminal 5: Output 2
- Terminal 7: 0 V
- Terminal 8: Shield, functional earth
Terminals 2 and 6 have no function. Beckhoff states that these points must not be connected to conductors.
Terminals 3 and 7 share the negative power contact. Terminals 4 and 8 connect to the mounting rail for shielding.
EtherCAT State and Output Data
In SAFEOP, the outputs remain in a safe state. Process output becomes active in OP.
Confirm the terminal reaches OP before chasing scaling errors. Then compare the two 16-bit output words with the commanded engineering value.
If the application uses the optional watchdog, check its fallback value and ramp. A copied project can retain settings that mask a wiring repair.
