Product Overview

The MU-PDOY22 (MUPDOY22) serves as a high-density 32-point Digital Output Input/Output Processor (IOP) for the Honeywell Experion and legacy TotalPlant Solution (TPS) systems. In mission-critical environments such as oil refining, chemical processing, and large-scale power generation, the MU-PDOY22 provides the essential interface between the control system and field-side final control elements like solenoids, motor starters, and indicators. Featuring integrated redundancy support via solid-state switching within the IOP, this module ensures that signal paths remain active even during hardware transitions. By utilizing advanced galvanic isolation and output readback checks, the module protects the system backplane from field electrical transients while providing engineers with real-time verification of output status, significantly reducing diagnostic time and preventing costly unscheduled outages.

Technical Configuration

The MU-PDOY22 is engineered for versatility, supporting both direct 24 VDC solid-state field terminations and 120/240 VAC relay interfaces through specific Field Termination Assemblies (FTAs).

  • System Redundancy: Supports full IOP redundancy with an integrated solid-state switch, allowing for bumpless transfer in high-availability applications.

  • Operational Security: Features output readback checking on the IOP to verify that the commanded state matches the actual hardware register state.

  • Fault Handling: The output condition on IOP failure is set to "Unpowered" to ensure a fail-safe state in the event of an onboard power regulator failure. Output conditions on PMM (Process Manager Module) failure are user-configurable.

  • Interface Flexibility: Supports two primary FTA types: the 24 VDC open-collector (current sinking) and the 120/240 VAC isolated relay contacts (Form A or Form B selectable via jumper).

Technical FAQs

How is redundancy handled for the MU-PDOY22 outputs?

The module utilizes an internal solid-state switch within the IOP to manage redundancy. This allows for a standby module to take control without disrupting the state of the field devices, providing a robust "bumpless" transfer mechanism for critical loops.

What is the difference between the MU-TDOY22 and MU-TDOY62 FTAs?

While both are 32-point 24 VDC FTAs, the MU-TDOY22 uses compression-type terminals with 1 fuse per 2 points, whereas the MU-TDOY62 uses screw-type terminals with 1 fuse per 8 points. Choice depends on your wiring standard and desired fuse granularity.

Can I mix Form A (Normally Open) and Form B (Normally Closed) contacts on the Relay FTA?

Yes. For the 120/240 VAC Relay FTAs (MU-TDOY23/63), the contact type is jumper selectable per individual output channel, allowing for mixed logic within a single 16-point FTA.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Relay Contact Longevity: For the MU-TDOY23/63 Relay FTAs, the mechanical life is rated for 10,000,000 operations, but electrical life drops to 200,000 operations at a full 3 A load. To maximize relay life in high-cycle applications, utilize external interposing relays or ensure load currents are kept well below maximum ratings.

  • Galvanic Isolation Standards: The DC output channels are galvanically isolated from the system common via photo-couplers. To maintain this protection, do not bridge the field-side common with the system common, as this would bypass the protective barrier against ground loops.

  • Relay Minimum Loading: Note that the relay FTAs have a minimum load current requirement of 10 mA. If you are using these to switch low-current high-impedance inputs (such as PLC inputs), ensure the voltage/current threshold meets this minimum to prevent contact oxidation and signal reliability issues over time.

  • Redundancy Methods: Always ensure the redundancy method is correctly identified in the system configuration. The MU-PDOY22 uses a solid-state switch in the IOP, which differs from some older relay-based redundancy methods.
