Micro Drive Specialist EMS Bets on Custom Engineering to Broaden Market Appeal

UK micro-drive specialist EMS is pairing Faulhaber high-torque gearheads and compact motion controllers with in-house custom engineering—aiming beyond catalog sales into tailored mechatronics.

Catalog micro drives win prototypes. Custom engineering wins production slots. That is the bet Electro Mechanical Systems (EMS) is placing as it puts high-torque gearheads, compact motion controllers, and an in-house design bench in front of OEMs who cannot live with a one-size-fits-all motor stack.

The Dorset-based supplier—founded in 1985 and long associated with Faulhaber micro motors and actuators—used the Engineering Design Show in Coventry to argue that distribution alone is no longer enough. Medical, aerospace, and defense customers want torque density, temperature headroom, and integration help in the same conversation.

Compact motion controllers are becoming the glue between miniature motors and machine control—especially when brushed, brushless, and linear axes share one cabinet language.

What EMS put on the table

Front and center were Faulhaber’s 22GPT HT and 32GPT HT gearheads, aimed at higher-torque duty where sudden load steps and rough environments punish lighter housings. Stainless-steel bodies, an operating window from -30 degC to +120 degC, up to four gear stages, and a wide reduction-ratio menu are the practical pitch: survive the transient, keep the package small.

Alongside the gearheads, EMS highlighted Faulhaber’s MC 3602 B and MC 3606 B motion controllers. The modules are positioned for easier integration of DC motors, brushless DC motors, and linear motors, with support for both servo and open-loop stepper operation. Continuous output current ratings of up to 2 A and 6 A respectively mark the split between lighter axes and hungrier loads.

EMS is not only a channel. From its Dorset facility it builds bespoke micro drive systems, owning the design path rather than handing OEMs a bag of catalog parts. Sales and Marketing Director Dave Walsha put the strategy bluntly: design sits at the center of engineering breakthroughs, and keeping that process in-house is how EMS claims to match specific requirements without trading away long-term performance.

That message lands in markets where mechanical envelopes are non-negotiable and field returns are expensive—surgical tools, aerospace actuation, defense mechanisms—more than in general packaging lines that can absorb a standard AC drive swap.

Where this sits in the wider drives landscape

Plant-floor teams living in kilowatt-class VFDs will not confuse these products with cabinet ACS or Sinamics frames. The overlap is architectural: motion objects still talk to PLCs, PACs, and safety layers. When miniature axes join a larger machine cell, integration questions return to the same control racks engineers already spare—whether that means scanning ABB drive and automation hardware for the power side, or aligning sequencing with PLC and PAC platforms that own permissives and interlocks.

Specialist distributors are under pressure from two directions: online commodity pricing on standard motors, and OEM demand for application engineering they will not find in a shopping cart. EMS’s EDS presence frames a familiar response—pair a strong micro-drive brand portfolio with captive design capability, then sell outcomes instead of SKUs.

Whether that broadens market appeal depends on execution after the show floor: documentation quality, prototype turnaround, and how cleanly custom assemblies survive volume manufacturing. Micro drives do not fail because catalogs are empty. They fail when mechanical constraints, thermal limits, and control interfaces are treated as afterthoughts. Vendors who can close that loop in-house will keep winning specification work even when a cheaper motor exists one click away. EMS is betting that story still sells. For OEMs building inside tight envelopes, it should.
