Overview
Allen-Bradley 1747-SN is a Remote I/O (RIO) scanner module for the SLC 500 control platform. Installed in a local 1746 chassis, it acts as the master of an Allen-Bradley RIO link, exchanging discrete I/O and, where supported, block-transfer data with remote adapters and compatible devices. An SLC 5/02 or later processor is required.
The scanner supports a maximum of four logical RIO racks, corresponding to 32 input and 32 output image words. Series B and later units can perform block transfers of up to 64 words per remote device when the application and adapter are configured for that function.

RIO Link and Configuration
The RIO link uses daisy-chained twisted-pair cabling. All participating devices must operate at the same baud rate. The physical cable ends require termination appropriate to the link speed and extended-node setting; shielding is grounded at the scanner end as specified in the installation instructions.
The scanner image and logical rack/group assignments must match the SLC program and the remote adapter configuration. A 1747-SN scanner and a 1747-ASB Remote I/O adapter serve different roles; they are not substitutes.
Replacement and Ordering Checks
- Confirm the exact 1747-SN catalog number, hardware series and front-label details.
- Record the existing DIP-switch baud setting and verify that every RIO device uses that rate.
- Back up the SLC program and scanner configuration, including G-file logical rack mapping and any block-transfer operations.
- Check that the chassis power supply has at least 600 mA of available 5 VDC backplane capacity for this module.
- Inspect the RIO cable, 3-pin connector, both end terminations and the scanner-end shield ground before attributing link faults to the scanner.
- Record the COMM and FAULT LED indications with the system running before ordering a replacement.
Rockwell lists an engineering migration path rather than a confirmed plug-in replacement. Any platform migration must be assessed separately from an in-place 1747-SN module change.
