Description

The Allen-Bradley 1756-IB16I is a 16-point isolated discrete DC input module designed for the ControlLogix platform. This single-slot module interfaces with binary sensors such as pushbuttons, limit switches, and auxiliary contacts, routing real-world field signals directly to the controller backplane. Engineered for high-noise industrial environments, the module features channel-to-channel optical isolation, protecting internal controller components from transient voltage spikes and ground loops originating in heavy-duty sensor networks.

Installed directly into any slot of a ControlLogix chassis except the primary controller slot, the 1756-IB16I supports deployment in local, distributed, and remote I/O architectures. Field wiring terminates via a compatible Removable Terminal Block (RTB), allowing technicians to disconnect and replace the module chassis-side without disturbing external sensor connections. Configurable input filter times enable users to fine-tune noise rejection and response latency based on specific application demands.

Features

  • 16 individually isolated input channels operating on a nominal 24VDC source
  • User-selectable input filter times for balancing noise rejection and signal response speed
  • Removable Terminal Block (RTB) interface supporting screw-clamp or spring-clamp connections
  • Backplane power consumption of 100mA at 5.1VDC and 3mA at 24VDC
  • Status indicators providing visual verification of individual channel states and module health

Applications

  • Interfacing discrete field devices such as limit switches, photoelectric sensors, and pushbuttons
  • Monitoring safety circuit auxiliary contacts and machine interlocks in automated assembly lines
  • Acquiring binary status signals from motor starters, contactors, and pneumatic solenoid valves
  • Providing isolated digital telemetry inputs in distributed ControlLogix remote rack architectures

FAQ

What is the primary function of the Allen-Bradley 1756-IB16I?

The 1756-IB16I is a 16-point isolated discrete DC input module for the ControlLogix platform, used to interface 24VDC binary field devices like pushbuttons, limit switches, and sensors with the PLC controller.

Does the 1756-IB16I require a Removable Terminal Block?

Yes, this module requires a compatible Removable Terminal Block (RTB) such as a 1756-TBCH or 1756-TBNH to terminate field wiring, allowing module replacement without disconnecting field cables.

What is the channel isolation rating for this module?

The 1756-IB16I provides channel-to-channel optical and galvanic isolation, rated at 250V reinforced continuous insulation voltage tested to 1350V AC for 2 seconds.

How much backplane current does the 1756-IB16I consume?

The module draws 100mA from the 5.1VDC backplane power rail and 3mA from the 24VDC backplane power rail, resulting in a total backplane power dissipation of 0.58W.
