Description

The Allen-Bradley 1771-P6S/B is a Series B auxiliary power supply module designed for PLC-5 Programmable Controllers and 1771 Control Systems. Operating with a nominal input voltage of 220V AC (input range of 194–264V AC RMS), this module delivers a backplane output current of 8 Amperes at +5V DC to power critical system components.

To protect system integrity and prevent data corruption, the 1771-P6S/B features an automated backplane shutdown mechanism. If the AC line voltage drops below the minimum operating threshold, the module immediately generates a shutdown signal in the backplane to ensure only valid data is retained in memory. The shutdown signal is automatically lifted once the line voltage recovers above the low-voltage limit. The module occupies a single slot, mounts directly onto the I/O chassis side plate, and ships with a 5-position terminal block for field wiring.

Features

  • Provides a regulated backplane output current of 8A at 5V DC.
  • Includes an automatic undervoltage shutdown signal to prevent data corruption during brownouts or power drops.
  • Supports both remote and local sensing configurations via two hardware jumpers located near the gold-plated edge connectors.
  • Offers scalable power expansion by allowing two power supplies to be paralleled on the same I/O chassis using a 1771-CT cable.
  • Compact 1-slot form factor designed for seamless integration on the 1771 I/O chassis side plate.

Applications

  • Delivering stable backplane power to Allen-Bradley PLC-5 programmable controller architectures.
  • Environments with fluctuating 220V AC power grids requiring hardware-level memory protection and managed system shutdowns.
  • Paralleled power supply configurations where current demands exceed the capacity of a single 8A supply module.

Installation & Configuration Guidelines

  • Sense Jumper Selection: Before inserting the module, configure the two jumpers located near the gold-plated back edge connectors. These jumpers dictate whether the system utilizes local sensing or remote sensing to regulate the power output.
  • Paralleling Power Supplies: If your I/O chassis configuration requires more than 8A of current, you can parallel two compatible supply modules (such as two -P6S units) on the same chassis. A 1771-CT Power-Supply Paralleling Cable must be connected between the two modules to enable cross-communication and balanced load sharing.
  • Chassis Mounting: The module is engineered to occupy 1 slot and should be secured tightly to the 1771 I/O chassis side plate to ensure appropriate thermal dissipation and mechanical stability.
  • Fusing Precautions: Ensure the input line is protected using the specified 1.5A, 250V slow-blow fuse to prevent damage to internal circuitry from transient inrush currents.

Allen-Bradley 1771-P6S/B PLC-5 Power Supply Module

What happens when the AC line voltage drops below the 194V AC limit on the 1771-P6S/B?

When the AC line voltage drops below the low voltage limit, the 1771-P6S/B automatically generates a shutdown signal in the chassis backplane. This action safely halts processes to ensure that only valid data is retained in the system memory. The shutdown signal is lifted once power returns above the minimum limit.

Can I combine the 1771-P6S/B with another power supply to get more than 8 Amperes of current?

Yes. To produce more power on the same I/O chassis, you can parallel two power supplies (such as two -P6S modules). This configuration requires a 1771-CT Power-Supply Paralleling Cable to facilitate communication and balance between the two modules.

Where are the remote/local sensing jumpers located on this module?

The two jumpers used to configure remote or local sensing are located near the gold-plated edge connectors on the back edge of the 1771-P6S/B module.
