Product Overview and Precision Control

The 1756-OF8 (1756OF8) is a high-density, versatile Analog Output Module belonging to the ControlLogix family. It provides 8 non-isolated channels capable of delivering high-precision voltage or current signals to field devices. Designed for demanding applications such as variable frequency drive (VFD) speed control, valve positioning, and actuator modulation, the 1756-OF8 offers sub-millisecond updates and high-resolution digital-to-analog conversion. This module is a cornerstone for closed-loop process control, allowing for seamless integration of analog field equipment into the Logix Integrated Architecture.

Hardware Architecture and Signal Flexibility

The 1756-OF8 occupies a single slot in any 1756 ControlLogix chassis and interfaces with the processor via the high-speed backplane.

  • Selectable Output Modes: Each of the 8 channels can be individually configured for Voltage (+/- 10V) or Current (0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA).

  • High Resolution: Features a 15-bit resolution across all ranges (approx. 320 uV per count for voltage and 0.65 uA per count for current), providing the granularity needed for sensitive flow or pressure control.

  • Fast Update Rates: Offers a RPI (Requested Packet Interval) as low as 2 ms for all 8 channels, ensuring that control commands are executed with minimal latency.

  • Integrated Diagnostics: Includes hardware features for Open Wire Detection (in current mode) and Short Circuit Protection, providing real-time feedback to the controller regarding field-side health.

Integrated Technical FAQ

Does the 1756-OF8 provide channel-to-channel isolation?

No. The 1756-OF8 is a non-isolated module, meaning all 8 channels share a common return. If your application requires independent grounding for each signal (to prevent ground loops between different drives), you should utilize the 1756-OF8I (Isolated) module instead.

What happens to the outputs if the PLC enters a Fault state or is switched to Program mode?

The module features configurable "Program Mode" and "Fault Mode" behaviors. Within the Studio 5000 software, you can choose to have each output hold its last value, switch to a specific safe state (e.g., 4 mA), or go to the minimum/maximum of its range.

Can I calibrate the 1756-OF8 in the field?

Yes. The module supports field calibration through the software. Using a high-precision voltmeter or ammeter, you can adjust the offset and gain parameters for each channel to account for environmental factors or long cable runs.

Engineering & Installation Protocols

  • Wiring Arm Compatibility: This module requires a 1756-TBNH (20-pin) or 1756-TBSH (Spring clamp) Removable Terminal Block (RTB). Always ensure the RTB is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged before applying field power.

  • Current Loop Resistance: When operating in current mode (4-20 mA), ensure the total loop impedance (wire resistance plus the load) does not exceed 550 Ohms. Exceeding this limit will prevent the module from reaching the full 20 mA output.

  • Shielding Strategy: For high-resolution analog control, use shielded twisted-pair (STP) cables. Terminate the shield at the ground bar of the ControlLogix chassis. Avoid grounding the shield at the field device end to prevent ground loops that introduce signal noise.

Engineering Advantages

The 1756-OF8 excels in Control System Density. By providing 8 channels in a single slot, it reduces the total chassis footprint and hardware costs for systems with high analog counts. Its ability to perform Digital-to-Analog conversion locally on the module allows the main processor to focus on high-level logic, while the 1756-OF8 handles the precise electrical ramp-up and ramp-down of signals. This makes it an ideal choice for the chemical, food and beverage, and power generation industries, where reliability and precise modulation of process variables are non-negotiable.
