The ABB PM865K01 (Product ID: 3BSE031151R1) is a high-integrity central processing unit package engineered for the AC 800M hardware platform. It is certified for use in safety-critical applications up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) in accordance with IEC 61508. Operating at 96MHz with 32MB of onboard memory, this processor unit serves as a highly robust control solution capable of running both non-SIL and SIL-classified applications simultaneously when deployed within an AC 800M High Integrity controller configuration.

The PM865K01 provides advanced internal diagnostics, enhanced oscillator supervision, and integrated double over-voltage protection on internal voltages. To comply with strict international safety standards, the module utilizes a dedicated monitoring architecture that requires configuration according to the official ABB Safety Manual. It facilitates expansive industrial connectivity through its built-in electrical and optical ModuleBus interfaces, alongside dual RJ45 Ethernet ports for highly available control network communications.

Features

  • Safety Integrity Level Certification: Fully qualified for SIL3 safety-critical installations when configured with an SM811 safety module.
  • High-Performance Architecture: Equipped with a 96MHz microprocessor and 32MB of robust system and user RAM.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Built-in hardware-driven double inverted memory handling for real-time bit error detection without cycle delay.
  • Electrical Safety: Integrates double over-voltage protection on internal supply lines and enhanced system watchdog timers.
  • Flexible Communication Expansion: Built-in CEX-Bus interface allows for step-by-step expansion using various fieldbus protocols.
  • Bumpless Redundancy: Supports hot stand-by processor redundancy via an RCU Link, enabling fault changeover in less than 10 ms.
  • Robust Mechanics: Features a slide-and-lock mechanism for secure DIN-rail installation and direct chassis grounding.

Applications

  • Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS): Emergency Shutdown (ESD) and fire and gas protection systems.
  • Distributed Control Systems (DCS): Continuous process control loop operations across large-scale industrial plants.
  • High-Integrity Automation: Critical infrastructure management requiring simultaneous execution of control and safety functions.
  • Boiler and Burner Management Systems (BMS): Safe sequencing and combustion monitoring for heavy utility boilers.

Installation Guidelines

  • DIN-Rail Mounting: Install horizontally onto a top-hat type TS 35/7.5 DIN-rail. Rotate the baseplate locking device counter-clockwise to the OPEN position before clipping onto the rail.
  • Slide & Interconnect: Once hooked over the upper edge of the rail, move the locking device to the SLIDE position. Slide the module sideways to align carefully and mate its baseplate connectors with adjacent units. Ensure strict pin alignment to prevent physical structural damage.
  • Grounding: Lock the unit into place by turning the locking screw clockwise to the LOCKED position. This engages the internal grounding mechanism firmly against the unpainted metal surface of the DIN-rail.
  • Power Supply Wiring: Connect the 24V DC lines into the screw terminals of the baseplate. To suppress unexpected errors from monitoring links when a single supply is utilized, jump input terminals SA and SB on the unit directly to +24 V DC.
  • Battery Handling: Do not plug the internal lithium battery into its respective slot until the controller has fully powered up normally and the active battery LED begins to flash. Inserting the battery into a powered-down module will instantly exhaust its cell power.

Can the local electrical ModuleBus be utilized in a redundant processor layout?

No. When running in a redundant CPU configuration, the electrical ModuleBus built into the baseplate cannot be used. All S800 I/O connections must interface through the optical ModuleBus via cluster modems.

What is the purpose of the TB852 plug included in the PM865K01 kit?

The TB852 is an RCU Link Termination plug. It must be installed into the RCU Link connector whenever the processor module is deployed in a single (non-redundant) controller configuration.

Why shouldn't I insert the backup battery before powering up the processor?

If the backup battery is placed into the holder before a normal external 24V DC supply is turned on, the CPU memory circuits will immediately begin draining the battery, significantly limiting its field lifespan.
