Product Overview

The EL4031 (EL4031) is a precision 1-channel analog output terminal designed for the EtherCAT I/O system, providing a bipolar voltage signal from -10 V to +10 V. Engineered for high-speed motion control and dynamic actuator positioning, this module is the industry standard for interfacing with servo drives, hydraulic proportional valves, and frequency inverters requiring a directional setpoint. By utilizing EtherCAT Distributed Clocks (DC) technology, the EL4031 achieves ultra-precise synchronization with a jitter of less than 1 microsecond, ensuring deterministic performance across complex multi-axis systems. Its compact 12 mm housing and short-circuit proof output make it a reliable choice for high-density control cabinets.

Technical Configuration

The hardware architecture of the EL4031 is optimized for high-speed signal processing with a fast conversion time of approximately 100 microseconds. It utilizes a 2-wire single-ended connection technology, drawing its 24 VDC power directly from the power contacts. A key technical advantage is the 12-bit resolution, which allows for 4,096 distinct voltage steps across the 20 V range. The terminal also features an integrated, configurable watchdog; in the event of a communication failure, the output can be programmed to transition to a specific safety value or follow a controlled ramp, preventing mechanical damage to connected machinery.

Technical FAQs

How is the -10 V to +10 V signal represented in the process image?

The signal is represented as a 1 x 16-bit AO value in a two's complement format. In a standard configuration, 0 V corresponds to 0x0000, +10 V to 0x7FFF, and -10 V to 0x8001. This allows for seamless integration with standard signed integer data types in TwinCAT PLC programs.

Can the EL4031 drive low-impedance loads?

The EL4031 requires a load impedance of greater than 5 kΩ. If the connected device has a lower impedance, the terminal may not be able to maintain the requested voltage, and the output error will exceed the specified 0.1%. For lower impedance loads, an external signal isolator or buffer amplifier may be required.

Is the terminal protected against overvoltage on the output side?

While the terminal is short-circuit proof, it is not designed to withstand external high-voltage injections. Ensure that the field wiring is isolated from AC power lines to prevent damage to the output stage.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Bipolar Signal Integrity: When working with ±10 V signals, ground potential differences can cause significant offsets. Always use shielded twisted-pair (STP) cabling. Ground the shield at the control cabinet entry point and ensure a common reference ground between the EL4031 and the receiving drive/actuator to maintain the 0.1% accuracy.

  • Watchdog Strategy: For motion applications, configure the watchdog in the CoE (CanOpen over EtherCAT) settings to a "Safe Value" of 0 V. This ensures that if the EtherCAT master fails, the connected drive will receive a "Stop" command rather than maintaining its last speed or drifting.

  • DC Synchronization: To leverage the sub-microsecond precision, the "Distributed Clocks" feature must be enabled in the EtherCAT Master settings. This is vital when the EL4031 is used as a setpoint generator for axes that must remain perfectly synchronized with encoder inputs elsewhere in the network.

  • Wiring Precision: Use the spring-actuated terminals for a vibration-proof connection. For stranded wires, the use of ferrules (0.14 to 1.5 mm²) is highly recommended. A stripping length of 8 to 9 mm is required to ensure proper engagement with the internal contact point.
