Product Overview

The EL9400 (EL9400) is a high-efficiency power supply terminal designed to refresh the E-bus signal and power within an EtherCAT Terminal block. In large-scale industrial automation systems—such as high-speed assembly lines, packaging machinery, and multi-axis motion control systems—the internal E-bus current consumption can exceed the capacity of the primary coupler. The EL9400 bridges this gap by converting a 24 VDC input into a stabilized 5 VDC supply, providing up to 2 A for the downstream E-bus communication electronics. This ensures stable data transmission and prevents signal degradation across extended I/O stations. By isolating the field potential from the logic potential with 500 V electrical isolation, the terminal also protects sensitive processor units from electrical noise and voltage spikes occurring on the field side.

Technical Configuration

The EL9400 serves as a dual-function power management module. Mechanically, it continues the 24 VDC power contacts (up to 10 A) to subsequent terminals for field device power. Electronically, it terminates the previous E-bus segment and initiates a new power segment for the internal communication logic. This module is essential when the total current requirement of the E-bus logic for the attached terminals exceeds the supply limit of the preceding Bus Coupler or Power Supply terminal. The unit supports pluggable wiring for all ESxxxx series housings, facilitating rapid maintenance and hardware replacement without disconnecting the primary wiring harness.

Technical FAQs

When is it mandatory to add an EL9400 to my EtherCAT terminal segment?

You must integrate an EL9400 when the cumulative current consumption of the E-bus (typically 5 V) for all connected terminals exceeds the output capacity of your coupler (often 1000 mA or 2000 mA). This is common in segments with high-density analog modules or complex functional terminals.

Can the EL9400 provide power to the field sensors and actuators?

The EL9400 passes the 24 VDC field power through its internal power contacts (up to 10 A), but its primary electronic function is to generate the 5 V E-bus logic power. If you only need to refresh the field power (24 VDC) without adding E-bus current, an EL9100 or EL9110 feed-in terminal may be more appropriate.

Does the EL9400 require software configuration in TwinCAT?

The EL9400 is a passive-transparent hardware module regarding the EtherCAT protocol; it does not occupy an address in the process image. However, it must be correctly placed in the physical and topological configuration in TwinCAT to accurately calculate the power budget of the E-bus segment.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Power Budget Calculation: Before installation, use the TwinCAT "Project Comparison" tool or manual calculation to sum the E-bus current requirements of all downstream modules. Ensure the total does not exceed the 2 A limit of the EL9400. Overloading the E-bus supply will lead to intermittent communication errors or "Invalid V30 State" faults.

  • Segment Isolation: The EL9400 provides 500 V electrical isolation between the E-bus and the power contacts. To maintain this integrity, ensure that the 24 VDC supply feeding the EL9400 is clean and separate from high-noise inductive load circuits whenever possible.

  • Wiring Efficiency: When using the ES9400 variant (pluggable), utilize the coded plug-in connectors to prevent wiring errors during field replacement. Ensure the 24 VDC input is wired with a minimum cross-section of 0.75 mm squared to handle the potential 10 A load passing through the power contacts to subsequent terminals.
