Description

The GE Fanuc IC697BEM731 is a single-channel Genius I/O Bus Controller Module (BCM) designed for the Series 90-70 programmable logic controller family. Operating within a single slot of an IC697 rack, the module provides a high-speed communication interface connecting the Series 90-70 CPU to distributed Genius I/O blocks, remote racks, supervisory systems, and peer controllers over a serial Genius LAN network.

During normal operation, the IC697BEM731 asynchronously scans connected discrete and analog Genius I/O blocks, transferring input and output data directly across the VME backplane to the CPU once per scan sweep. The module supports directed communications initiated through CPU Communication Service Requests (COMMREQ), broadcast and point-to-point datagrams, and repetitive Global Data exchanges between multiple controllers and host computers.

System reliability is supported through built-in diagnostic monitoring linked directly to the Series 90-70 Alarm Processor function. Diagnostic alarms and bus faults are automatically captured, time-stamped, and queued into the PLC CPU fault table for real-time analysis and historical logging.

Features

  • Single-channel serial interface providing communication across a Genius I/O network.
  • Supports up to 30 distributed Genius I/O drops per channel within a 32-node address architecture (addresses 0 through 31).
  • Configurable serial transmission speeds: 153.6 Kbaud standard, 153.6 Kbaud extended, 76.8 Kbaud, and 38.4 Kbaud.
  • Front-mounted Hand-Held Monitor (HHM) serial port for local programming, testing, and diagnostics.
  • Soft-configured directly through Series 90-70 programming software, eliminating physical hardware jumpers or DIP switches.
  • Architecture support for redundant Genius bus cabling, redundant I/O blocks, and hot-standby redundant CPU systems.
  • Global Data support for automatic, repetitive peer-to-peer data transfers between networked PLC controllers.

FAQ

What is the primary function of the GE Fanuc IC697BEM731 module?

The IC697BEM731 serves as a single-channel Genius I/O bus controller module for Series 90-70 PLCs, enabling communication between the central processor and distributed Genius I/O blocks or peer controllers over a serial Genius LAN network.

How many devices can operate on one IC697BEM731 communication bus?

The IC697BEM731 supports up to 30 Genius I/O drops per channel in addition to the bus controller itself, allowing communication across network addresses 0 through 31.

What baud rates and cable distances are supported by the IC697BEM731?

The module supports four baud rates: 153.6 Kbaud standard up to 2000 ft, 153.6 Kbaud extended up to 3500 ft, 76.8 Kbaud up to 4500 ft, and 38.4 Kbaud up to 7500 ft.

How is the IC697BEM731 module configured?

The IC697BEM731 uses soft configuration downloaded directly from the Series 90-70 CPU via compatible Logicmaster 90-70 (MS-DOS) or Windows programming tools, removing the need for onboard hardware jumpers.

Can the IC697BEM731 be used in high-availability and redundant configurations?

Yes, the IC697BEM731 supports redundant Genius bus cabling, redundant Genius I/O blocks, and hot-standby redundant CPU configurations for critical industrial automation systems.
