Product Overview

The KM2002-0002 (KM 2002-0002) is a high-density Bus Terminal module designed for efficient control of binary actuators in space-constrained industrial environments. This 16-channel digital output module provides 24 VDC at 0.5 A per channel, utilizing a compact 26.5 mm housing that integrates seamlessly into the Beckhoff K-bus I/O system. In applications such as materials handling, automated assembly, and textile machinery, the KM2002-0002 serves as a robust interface for driving ohmic, inductive, and lamp loads. The "0002" variant is distinguished by its 1-wire pluggable connection technology and integrated status LEDs for every channel, allowing maintenance teams to verify output states at a glance and significantly reducing the time required for field diagnostics.

Technical Configuration

The KM2002-0002 hardware is engineered for high-availability logic control. It features two 8-channel pluggable connectors that facilitate rapid wiring and module replacement without disturbing the field cables. Each of the 16 outputs is short-circuit proof and protected against reverse voltage, with an electrical isolation of 500 V between the internal K-bus and the field potential. The 1-wire connection technology is optimized for installations where actuators share a common ground at a central distribution point, minimizing the wiring volume within the local terminal segment. Internal logic power is drawn from the K-bus (typ. 5 mA), while the field power is supplied through the pluggable wiring level to ensure maximum current delivery to the process actuators.

Technical FAQs

How does the KM2002-0002 differ from the KM2002-0004?

The KM2002-0002 uses 1-wire connection technology, which is ideal for compact systems where ground wiring is handled externally. In contrast, the -0004 version uses 3-wire technology, providing local 24V and 0V distribution for each actuator within the plug itself. Both feature integrated status LEDs.

What is the maximum current capacity of the entire module?

While each channel is rated for 0.5 A, the total current capacity is limited by the power supply to the pluggable connectors. If all 16 channels are driven at full load simultaneously, the system must be capable of providing a stable 8 A of field power.

Is any software configuration required to activate the LEDs?

No, the status LEDs are hardware-driven and directly reflect the state of the digital output circuit. If the PLC sets a bit in the process image to "1," the corresponding LED will illuminate, provided field power is present.

Engineering & Installation Guide

Wiring and Signal Grounding:

When using the 1-wire connection technology of the KM2002-0002, ensure that the return ground (0V) for your actuators is correctly referenced back to the same power supply providing the 24V field potential to the module. Use high-quality 0.08 to 1.5 mm² wire and ensure a stripping length of 8 mm to maintain a secure, gas-tight connection within the pluggable terminal.

Inductive Load Protection:

The module is rated for a breaking energy of < 150 mJ per channel. When switching highly inductive loads such as large solenoids or heavy-duty contactors, the flyback voltage can cause electromagnetic interference or premature wear on the internal switching components. Installing external quenching diodes (freewheeling diodes) directly across the inductive load is a best-practice engineering step to maximize the lifespan of the terminal.

Module Placement and Heat Dissipation:

To ensure reliable operation at the maximum rated temperature of 55 deg C, install the module on a 35 mm DIN rail in a horizontal orientation. Provide sufficient clearance (approx. 30 mm) from cable ducts and other heat-generating components. The double slot and key connection ensures a rigid mechanical link between adjacent Bus Terminals, which is critical for maintaining K-bus communication integrity in environments prone to vibration.
