What Is SCADA? Supervisory Control Without Replacing the PLC
SCADA sits above PLCs and RTUs: it acquires field data, alarms operators, and issues supervisory commands across plants and remote assets—without replacing local deterministic control.

Managing complex logic and high-speed device automation is the core function of the Mitsubishi Electric FX5U-32MR/DS, a high-performance central processing unit belonging to the MELSEC iQ-F family. This compact controller integrates advanced processing capability with built-in analog and serial interfaces, making it an efficient solution for standalone machines and distributed control topologies. With a DC power input and a hybrid arrangement of sink/source inputs and robust relay outputs, this unit provides exceptional operational reliability in harsh industrial environments.

The FX5U-32MR/DS utilizes a 24 VDC operational power input, distinguishing it from the standard AC-powered FX5U-32MR/ES model. When upgrading existing legacy FX3U-32MR/DS installations, verify the physical dimensional footprint differences and ensure that the legacy system project is converted within GX Works3 to match the high-speed execution profiles and direct terminal configurations of the iQ-F architecture.
The integrated analog input channels (0 to 10 VDC) are highly sensitive to electromagnetic interference. It is critical to route analog signal cables entirely separate from high-current AC motor leads or VFD cables. Always utilize twisted, double-shielded copper wiring for analog runs and ground the shielding foil exclusively at the control cabinet ground star point to prevent low-frequency earth loops from distorting signal conversions.
The sinking or sourcing logic of the discrete inputs is determined by terminal S/S. For a standard NPN/sink configuration, wire the S/S terminal directly to the +24V supply. For a PNP/source configuration, wire the S/S terminal to the 0V common. Ensure all screw-type terminal connections are torqued between 0.5 to 0.8 N-m to maintain secure electrical contact without compromising terminal integrity.
Mount the CPU module securely onto a standard 35mm symmetrical DIN rail inside a protective, IP54-rated metal enclosure to prevent environmental particulate ingress.
Establish a low-impedance connection from the SG terminal directly to a dedicated control ground point with a wire cross-section of at least 2.0 mm2.
Terminate the field wiring with clean crimp-on insulated bootlace ferrules before clamping the connections to the removable terminal blocks.
