Description

Engineered for high-speed data processing and expansion within the MELSEC-Q control architecture, the Mitsubishi Electric Q4MCA-2MBS is a high-reliability Static RAM (SRAM) memory cassette. This hardware-level module expands the available volatile storage capacity of compatible high-performance Q-Series CPU modules, enabling handling of extensive file registers, recipe data, system logging, and trace functions. Because it utilizes high-speed SRAM technology, it provides near-instantaneous read and write execution cycles crucial for time-critical industrial processes.

Key Features

  • 2 Megabytes Capacity: Provides expanded storage space dedicated to device memory and file registers.
  • High-Speed Access: Low-latency volatile memory technology designed to match high-performance PLC CPU cycle times.
  • Direct Interface: Slide-in installation directly into the designated CPU memory cassette slot.
  • Industrial Durability: Solid-state architecture built to withstand severe physical vibrations and temperature swings common to factory floor environments.

Applications

  • Expanded recipe handling and production batch tracking on assembly lines.
  • High-density data logging, trending, and diagnostic buffering in process automation.
  • Storage of extensive coordinate systems, tool matrices, and motion profiles in complex packaging systems.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

Because this expansion card uses volatile SRAM technology, memory retention is fully dependent on the host CPU battery system (such as the Q6BAT). If the system is powered down and the CPU battery level drops below the operational threshold, all register data and files hosted on the memory cassette will be permanently lost. It is critical to implement regular automated backups from the volatile cassette to a non-volatile flash ROM card or external SCADA/HMI server.

Commissioning & Handling Tips

Before mounting or unmounting the cassette, verify the static potential of your work area. Always wear an ESD-grounded wrist strap when handling the card to prevent localized electrostatic discharge from damaging the exposed memory bus contacts on the rear connector interface.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL ELECTRICAL SAFETY WARNING

Do not attempt to insert or extract the memory cassette while the PLC main power supply or expansion chassis power is energized. Failing to completely de-energize the unit will cause physical short-circuits on the CPU interface bus, destroying the CPU module, the memory cassette, or corrupting active running registers.

1
Power down the entire rack assembly containing the host CPU and verify that the power LED status indicator is completely off.
2
Open the protective front cover of the Q-Series CPU module to expose the integrated cassette slots.
3
Align the keying guides on the sides of the Q4MCA-2MBS with the guide tracks inside the CPU slot. Slide the cassette firmly forward until it clicks securely into place.
4
Secure the cassette latch (if equipped), close the CPU module cover, restore system power, and perform a memory format and configuration check using GX Developer or GX Works2 software.

Is the stored data retained in the memory cassette if power is completely lost?

Since this card utilizes volatile SRAM, it requires a functioning battery on the host CPU (such as a Q6BAT) to preserve data when primary rack power is removed.

Can I hot-swap this card during live PLC operation?

No. The system must be fully de-energized prior to inserting or removing the cassette. Hot-swapping will damage the memory bus circuitry and corrupt system registers.

Which software is used to configure and map the expansion memory?

You can configure, allocate, and format the additional memory blocks through Mitsubishi's GX Developer or GX Works2 programming packages.
