Description

Designed for high-speed thermal monitoring within the Sysmac automation platform, the Omron NX-TS2102 delivers high-resolution temperature data acquisition directly to the NX bus interface. This 2-point thermocouple input unit enables real-time temperature tracking with an ultra-low conversion cycle time of 10 ms per unit, making it an excellent choice for dynamic closed-loop heating and cooling processes. Utilizing a screwless clamping terminal block with 16 connection terminals, the module simplifies field commissioning while ensuring vibration-resistant wire terminations in demanding industrial environments.

Features

  • Dual-Channel Input: Supports two independent thermocouple input points within a compact 12 mm wide profile.
  • Rapid Conversion Speed: Achieves a fast 10 ms conversion time per Unit for rapid thermal response loop configurations.
  • High-Resolution Measurement: Yields a maximum resolution of 0.01 degC for highly precise process regulation.
  • Universal Thermocouple Compatibility: Directly interfaces with K, J, T, E, L, U, N, R, S, WRe5-26, and PLII sensor types.
  • Robust Isolation: Employs galvanic isolation via a transformer and digital isolator between inputs and the internal NX bus, as well as channel-to-channel.
  • Free-Run Refreshing: Leverages the Free-Run I/O refreshing method for continuous, non-synchronized background processing.

Applications

  • Plastic Extrusion & Injection Molding: High-precision barrel zone temperature control.
  • Packaging Machinery: Thermal management of sealing jaws and shrink wrapping heating elements.
  • Industrial Ovens & Furnaces: Multi-zone heat treatment profile logging and burner control.
  • Semiconductor Processing: Critical ambient chamber thermal monitoring and stability analysis.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The NX-TS2102 is highly compatible across the entire Sysmac platform, including NX102, NX1P2, and NJ series controllers when utilizing EtherCAT or EtherNet/IP coupler units. If your process requires RTD sensors (such as Pt100) instead of thermocouples, consider the alternative NX-TS2101 model. For installations requiring higher density in a single slot, the 4-channel NX-TS3102 is a direct functional alternative with similar conversion characteristics.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

To achieve the specified maximum conversion resolution of 0.01 degC, the module requires a warm-up period of 45 minutes after system start-up. In high-density control enclosures, avoid placing high-power components (like contactors, variable frequency drives, or power supplies) immediately adjacent to the temperature unit, as localized thermal radiation can distort the built-in cold junction compensation (CJC) reference reading.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

When wiring the 16-pin screwless terminal block, ensure that thermocouple extension wires match the correct alloy chemistry of the sensor type (e.g., K-type extension wire for K-type thermocouples) up to the terminal clamp to prevent parasitic junctions. Shielded thermocouple cables should be used, with the shield terminated at a single low-impedance ground point to minimize electrical noise induced from adjacent mains wiring.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING

Always isolate all system power sources (mains supply and external I/O power) before inserting or removing the module from the NX bus rack assembly. Failure to completely de-energize the unit during terminal maintenance or expansion may cause permanent damage to the integrated digital isolators or interrupt synchronous communication on the active backplane.

1

Mount the module onto the standard 35 mm DIN rail. Engage the upper hook of the NX Unit connector with the DIN rail, then press downward until the locking lever clicks securely into position.

2

Connect the adjacent NX Units together, sliding them firmly until the side-plane bus connectors link cleanly. Secure the end plate on the rightmost unit of the assembly.

3

Perform wiring of the thermocouple cables using solid wires or ferrules. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the terminal release hole, insert the stripped wire into the clamp terminal, and release the screwdriver to lock.

What sensor types are natively supported by the NX-TS2102?

The module natively supports K, J, T, E, L, U, N, R, S, WRe5-26, and PLII thermocouple types, selectable via software configuration in Sysmac Studio.

Does this thermocouple unit require an external power supply?

No, the unit draws its operating power directly from the NX bus connection and does not require an external I/O power supply.

How long does the NX-TS2102 take to warm up for high-accuracy readings?

It requires a warm-up period of at least 45 minutes to ensure internal thermal equilibrium and reliable Cold Junction Compensation (CJC).

What is the conversion cycle speed for this temperature module?

The conversion time is 10 ms per Unit, enabling high-speed temperature updates for critical control systems.
