Description

The MVI56E-MCM acts as a single-slot input/output communication interface between the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix backplane and Modbus-compatible networks. By enabling direct integration, this high-performance Modbus Communication Module allows ControlLogix processors to easily read and write data from Modbus RTU/ASCII devices, including programmable controllers, instrumentation, power monitors, and speed drives.

Engineered for backward compatibility, the module serves as a direct drop-in replacement for the legacy MVI56-MCM version, utilizing existing ladder logic configuration structures to minimize system migration downtime. The module features an integrated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port dedicated to setup, network diagnostics, and configuration management, backed by Auto Cable Crossover Detection. Highly customizable user memory allows mapping of up to 10,000 registers of 16-bit data, optimizing backplane data exchanges with the processor.

Features

  • Compatible with any standard 1756 ControlLogix backplane chassis.
  • Supports dynamic Modbus Master and Slave parameter configuration directly through RSLogix 5000 or Studio 5000 controller tags.
  • Onboard 10/100 Mbps RJ45 Ethernet port for diagnostics, configuration, and monitoring.
  • Equipped with a 4-character, scrolling, alphanumeric LED display providing real-time diagnostics, IP address verification, and port status in plain English.
  • Includes ProSoft Discovery Service (PDS) compatibility to locate the module on the network and assign IP configurations.
  • Fully supports Remove and Insert Under Power (RIUP) for active system servicing without downtime.

Applications

  • Integration of power monitoring equipment, electrical relays, and substations into ControlLogix architectures.
  • SCADA system data aggregation across manufacturing, oil and gas, and wastewater facilities.
  • Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) interface for flow computers and multi-drop field instrumentation.
  • Inter-processor communications between legacy Modbus networks and modern Allen-Bradley systems.

Installation Guidelines

  • Chassis Installation: Insert the module into any available single slot of a ControlLogix chassis. Ensure that the chassis grounding meets industrial electrical safety codes.
  • Hot-Swap Precautions: While the module supports RIUP, verify that communication ports are not actively processing critical field operations during module physical replacement.
  • Thermal Management: Maintain standard panel convective cooling flow. Ensure ambient conditions inside the cabinet do not exceed the upper limit of 60 degC.
  • Serial Cable Configuration: When deploying RS-485/422 configurations, utilize high-quality shielded twisted-pair cables to prevent signal distortion from industrial electromagnetic interference.

Is the MVI56E-MCM backward compatible with the older MVI56-MCM?

Yes, the MVI56E-MCM is designed as a direct functional replacement. It is fully backward-compatible with legacy MVI56-MCM applications, enabling quick migrations with minimal or no ladder logic changes.

What is the current consumption of the module on the backplane?

The MVI56E-MCM draws 800 mA at 5 Vdc and 3 mA at 24 Vdc from the ControlLogix backplane.

Does this module support hot-swapping?

Yes, the module supports RIUP (Remove and Insert Under Power), allowing users to replace or insert modules without shutting down the ControlLogix processor chassis.
