The module includes a "Wiring Fail" indication. If a thermocouple wire is broken or disconnected, the status bit in the process image is set, and the input data moves to a defined limit value, allowing the safety logic in the PLC to trigger an alarm or emergency shutdown.

Can this module measure millivolt signals without a thermocouple?

Yes. Beyond standard thermocouple types, the KL3311 can be configured for raw mV measurement within the ranges of +/- 30 mV to +/- 120 mV. This is particularly useful for custom sensors or specialized laboratory instrumentation.

Is software configuration required for the KL3311?

The terminal operates with default settings (Type K) immediately. However, to change sensor types or adjust the process image (e.g., enabling control/status bytes), configuration must be performed via the TwinCAT System Manager or the respective Bus Coupler.

  • Cold Junction Accuracy: For optimal measurement accuracy, avoid installing heat-generating components (such as high-power motor starters or power supplies) directly below the KL3311. Excessive ambient heat can create thermal gradients across the terminal contacts, affecting the internal cold-junction compensation.

  • Shielding and Noise Reduction: Although the module is electrically isolated, always use compensated thermocouple cables (extension wires) for the entire run to the terminal. Ensure that the cable shield is grounded at the entry point of the control cabinet to minimize EMI interference on the low-voltage mV signals.

  • Ex ec Compliance: When installing in ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 environments, the terminal must be housed in an enclosure providing at least IP54 protection. Ensure that the power is disconnected before plugging or unplugging the module to prevent spark risks in hazardous atmospheres.
