Product Overview

The X20SO6530 (X20SO6530) is a high-performance safety relay module designed for the B&R X20 system, providing a robust interface for high-power safety switching. This module features 6 independent relays, each equipped with a normally open (NO) contact capable of switching both 230 VAC and 24 VDC at up to 6 A. Engineered for safety-critical applications such as emergency stops, safety gate locking, and motor power isolation, the X20SO6530 utilizes internal high-side and low-side control to ensure safe disconnection even in the event of a single-channel failure. By integrating mechanical relay contacts with advanced safety monitoring logic, this module bridges the gap between low-voltage digital control and high-power industrial actuators, ensuring compliance with SIL 3 and PLe safety standards in sectors like heavy machinery and automated production lines.

Technical Configuration

The hardware architecture of the X20SO6530 is centered around fail-safe operation and diagnostic coverage. Each of the 6 relay outputs is monitored internally to ensure the contacts have correctly transitioned to the requested state. The module operates on a nominal 24 VDC supply with integrated reverse polarity protection to prevent damage during installation. A defining feature of this variant is the high-side and low-side control logic, which provides redundant path interruption for maximum safety integrity. For hardware revisions B5 and higher, the module supports a broad nominal output current range from 5 mA up to 6 A, allowing it to drive everything from small signal relays to heavy-duty contactors without requiring additional interposing relays.

Technical FAQs

Can the X20SO6530 switch different voltages on different channels?

Yes. Since the module uses mechanical relay contacts, the channels are typically isolated from each other. However, you must always consult the specific wiring diagram in the B&R user manual to confirm the isolation groups and ensure that mixing 230 VAC and 24 VDC on adjacent terminals meets local electrical safety and clearance codes.

What is the significance of the "High-Side and Low-Side Control"?

This is a safety design where the module switches both the supply and the return path internally. If one switching transistor fails or shorts, the second redundant switch can still break the circuit, ensuring the connected actuator reaches a "Safe State" (de-energized).

Does this module require a specific Safety CPU?

Yes. Like all B&R Safe I/O modules, the X20SO6530 must be managed by an X20 Safety CPU (e.g., X20SL series) using the openSAFETY protocol. A standard PLC CPU cannot execute the safety logic required to operate these relay outputs.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Hardware Revision Check: Before commissioning, verify the hardware revision printed on the side of the module. If the revision is lower than B5, the maximum switching current is limited to 2 A. Forcing a 6 A load through an older revision will lead to premature contact welding and module failure.

  • Contact Protection (Snubbers): When switching inductive AC loads (such as large solenoid valves or motor starters), it is highly recommended to install an RC snubber circuit across the load. This suppresses the arcing that occurs during contact opening, significantly extending the electrical life of the relay contacts and reducing EMI.

  • Arcing and Minimum Load: To maintain the self-cleaning effect of the relay contacts, ensure the load is at least 5 mA. If switching extremely low-current signals (dry circuits), the contacts may develop a film over time that increases resistance. For low-current signaling, consider using a safe transistor output module instead.
