The Woodward 1751-6058 is a specialized 4-Channel Magnetic Pickup (MPU) Transformer module. It is designed to act as an isolation and signal-conditioning interface between magnetic speed sensors and electronic control systems (such as the MicroNet or 505/505E controllers). By using transformer isolation, it protects sensitive control electronics from common-mode noise and ground loops often found in large-scale engine and turbine environments.

Installation Guidelines

  • Wiring Layout: Connect the MPU leads to the input terminals of the transformer. Ensure that the output leads going to the control system are shielded, twisted-pair cables.

  • Grounding: The transformer provides galvanic isolation. The shield of the cable from the MPU to the transformer should typically be grounded at the transformer end, while the shield from the transformer to the controller should be grounded at the controller end.

  • Signal Integrity: Avoid routing the MPU signal lines parallel to high-voltage AC power cables or ignition leads to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI).

  • Channel Independence: Each of the 4 channels is electrically isolated from the others. You can use this module to isolate signals for up to four different speed sensors (e.g., redundant speed sensing on a single turbine).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why use a transformer between the MPU and the controller?

Large industrial engines often have significant electrical noise. A transformer breaks the direct electrical connection (ground loop), ensuring that only the frequency signal is passed through, which prevents "noise" from being misinterpreted as engine speed.

Does this module require external power?

No. Like the magnetic pickups it supports, the 1751-6058 is a passive device. It utilizes the energy from the AC signal generated by the MPU to operate.

Can this module be used with Proximity Probes?

No. This module is specifically designed for passive Magnetic Pickups (MPU). Active proximity probes (Eddy Current probes) require a DC power supply and produce a different signal type that is not compatible with this isolation transformer.

How do I troubleshoot a specific channel?

You can measure the AC voltage on the input side while the engine is cranking (typically $> 1.0 \text{ VAC}$). Then, measure the output side. You should see a corresponding AC signal. If the input is present but the output is zero, that specific transformer channel may be faulty.
