Description

The Emerson VE3008 is an MQ Controller designed for the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS). This hardware component provides communication and control between field devices and other nodes on the control network. It executes local control strategies with execution speeds up to every 100 ms. The VE3008 offers identical configurable memory and execution capabilities to the legacy MD Plus Controller, supporting seamless system scalability and legacy migrations. Online operational updates are automatically captured to ensure data integrity within the plant architecture.

Features

  • Seamlessly executes control strategies with configurable update loops as fast as 100 ms.
  • Retains entire active control strategies within internal non-volatile random-access memory (NVM RAM) to enable completely autonomous cold restarts following a supply power loss.
  • Integrates full-duplex Ethernet communication ports capable of reaching up to 100 MB/s maximum throughput.
  • Performs automated system identification and network addressing immediately upon initial system power-up.
  • Detects physical subsystem I/O interfaces automatically to identify distinct connected channel attributes.
  • Built-in visual identification function allows operators to flash specific faceplate LEDs via user interface software commands.
  • Facilitates data pass-through capabilities to securely route smart HART device variables directly to engineering workstations.
  • Provides functional compatibility for assignments to CHARM I/O Cards (CIOC) for electronic marshalling schemes when operating on supported software environments.

Applications

  • Chemical processing facilities and distillation column control networks.
  • Power generation utility oversight and distributed node monitoring.
  • Continuous batch execution and process loop regulations in oil and gas refineries.
  • Legacy automation platform migrations including PROVOX and RS3 structures.

Installation Guidelines

  • Carrier Mounting: The module must be positioned and installed securely on the right slot of a compatible M-series Power/Controller Carrier.
  • Power Provision: Each controller node demands an independent, dedicated system power supply unit tied to the carrier backplane.
  • Software Version Dependencies: Baseline operation requires DeltaV software version v10.3.1 or higher. Electronic marshalling or CHARM structural allocation necessitates software version v14.3 or later.
  • Network Isolation: For implementations utilizing Electronic Marshalling, dedicated DeltaV Smart Switches must be installed to bridge data paths between controllers and CHARM I/O Cards (CIOC).

Compliance and Certifications

  • CE Compliance: Certified
  • EMC Standards: EN 61326-1
  • FM Certification (USA): Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D, T4 hazardous locations
  • cFM Certification (Canada): Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D, T4 hazardous locations
  • ATEX Classification: II 3G Ex ec IIC T4 Gc (Zone 2 installation environments)
  • IEC Ex Classification: II 3G Ex ec IIC T4 Gc
  • Marine Appraisals: Compliant with IACS E10 guidelines; holds ABS Certificate of Design Assessment and DNV Type Approval Certificate
  • Industrial Cybersecurity: Certified to Achilles Communications Certification Level 2 requirements

What software version is required to use the module?

The device requires a baseline of DeltaV system software version v10.3.1 or later. If you need to assign CHARMs for electronic marshalling functions, software version v14.3 or later must be installed.

Can the device be used in hazardous environmental areas?

Yes, the module is certified for installation within hazardous areas under FM/cFM Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D (T4 temperature rating) as well as ATEX/IECEx Zone 2 setups.

What is the function of the internal non-volatile memory?

The internal NVM RAM fully retains the active control strategies configuration. In the event of an unexpected power failure, this memory ensures the device can execute a completely autonomous cold restart once power returns.

Where should the module be mounted on its carrier?

The module must be explicitly installed on the designated right slot position of an M-series 2-wide Power/Controller Carrier.
