Product Overview and Connectivity Evolution

The 1785-ENET/C (1785ENET/C) is a high-performance communication interface specifically designed for the PLC-5 series of controllers. It serves as a critical bridge between the legacy PLC-5 backplane and modern EtherNet/IP networks. The "Series C" designation represents the most advanced and stable hardware revision, offering superior packet processing and reliability. By adding the 1785-ENET/C to a PLC-5 system, industrial facilities can integrate their legacy control architecture with contemporary SCADA, MES, and ERP systems without the high cost of a total processor migration. This module enables remote programming, data acquisition, and controller-to-controller interlocking over standard industrial Ethernet infrastructure.

Hardware Architecture and Network Logic

The 1785-ENET/C is a "side-car" style module that attaches to the left side of a PLC-5 processor. It does not occupy a standard I/O slot, preserving chassis space for field I/O.

  • Communication Port: Features one 10Base-T (RJ45) port for standard twisted-pair Ethernet cabling and one AUI (15-pin) port for older transceiver-based connections.

  • Protocol Support: Primarily utilizes CSP (Client/Server Protocol) and EtherNet/IP for messaging. It supports both peer-to-peer messaging (MSG instructions) and remote programming via RSLinx.

  • Throughput Capacity: Optimized for "Messaging" rather than "I/O Control." It is best suited for uploading/downloading programs and exchanging data packets with other PLCs or HMIs.

  • Compatibility: Works with most PLC-5/20, 5/40, and 5/80 processors, provided the processor has the appropriate side-car interface connector.

Integrated Technical FAQ

Why does the module only support 10 Mbps instead of 100 Mbps?

The 1785-ENET/C was designed during the peak of the PLC-5 era when 10Base-T was the industrial standard. While slower than modern modules, 10 Mbps is more than sufficient for the data table sizes found in PLC-5 processors (typically 32K to 100K words).

How do I set the IP address for this module?

The IP address is generally assigned using the BOOTP/DHCP Utility from Rockwell Automation. Once the MAC address is detected and an IP is assigned, you must "Disable BOOTP" in the configuration to make the address permanent (static).

Can I use this module for high-speed I/O control?

No. The 1785-ENET/C is designed for messaging and programming. For Ethernet-based I/O control (EtherNet/IP I/O), the PLC-5 system typically requires a newer 1771-AENTR or a migration to the ControlLogix platform.

Engineering & Installation Protocols

  • Side-Car Mechanical Connection: Before applying power, ensure the side-car connector pins are perfectly aligned with the PLC-5 processor. Secure the modules together using the integrated sliding latches. Forcing the connection can result in bent pins and permanent hardware failure.

  • Network Topology: Since the module is 10 Mbps half-duplex, it is highly sensitive to network "collisions." For optimal performance, connect the 1785-ENET/C to a managed switch that can be forced to 10MB/Half on that specific port to avoid auto-negotiation mismatches.

  • Status LED Diagnostics: * ENET LED: Solid Green indicates a valid link.

    • PROC LED: Solid Green indicates the module is communicating with the PLC-5 processor.

    • FLT LED: Red indicates a hardware internal fault or an IP address conflict.

Engineering Advantages

The 1785-ENET/C provides a "Life Extension" for the thousands of PLC-5 systems still in operation today. Its primary advantage is connectivity without disruption. Engineers can install the module to extract real-time production data for "Smart Factory" initiatives without altering the core machine logic. Furthermore, the Series C hardware includes improved firmware that handles modern network traffic more efficiently than the older Series A or B units, providing a more stable connection for remote troubleshooting and enterprise-level reporting.
