A practical engineering guide to PLC CPU operation, from deterministic scan cycles and I/O image tables to memory, communications, diagnostics, redundancy, processor sizing, and reliable system...
Facilitating high-availability network topologies, the Schneider Electric 170NEF16021 serves as a dedicated Modbus Plus communication adapter with redundant ports for the Modicon Momentum platform. This module mounts directly onto Momentum I/O bases, enabling distributed field devices to communicate over a dual-path Modbus Plus network for enhanced fault tolerance in mission-critical control architectures.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Schneider Electric |
| Brand / Range | Modicon Momentum |
| Model Number | 170NEF16021 |
| Product Type | Modbus Plus Communication Adapter (Redundant) |
| Communication Ports | 2 x Modbus Plus (DB9 Female) |
| Network Topology | Token Ring (Redundant Path) |
| Product Lifecycle Phase | Phase-Out (Legacy) |
| Commodity Code | 85389091 |
| Shipping Weight (Calculated) | 0.21 kg |
| Package Dimensions (Calculated) | 18.0 x 26.0 x 5.5 cm |
| Port / Terminal | Interface Type | Function / Assignment |
|---|---|---|
| Port A | 9-pin D-sub (DB9) Female | Primary Modbus Plus Network Cable Connection |
| Port B | 9-pin D-sub (DB9) Female | Secondary (Redundant) Modbus Plus Network Cable Connection |
The 170NEF16021 is designed specifically for redundant Modbus Plus network layouts. If physical media redundancy is not required, the single-port 170NEF11021 adapter can be utilized as a non-redundant alternative. Ensure that your network configuration software (such as Modsoft, Concept, or Unity Pro / EcoStruxure Control Expert) is configured for dual-cable operation when deploying the redundant variant.
Modbus Plus networks require strict adherence to trunk-and-drop cabling rules. The drop cable length from the tap to the 170NEF16021 must not exceed 10 feet (3 meters). Additionally, cumulative drop cable lengths across the entire segment must be factored into the overall network length calculations to prevent token rotation timeouts and communication retries.
When wiring the redundant ports, ensure that Port A on all adapters is connected to the primary trunk cable, and Port B is connected to the secondary trunk cable. Crossing the primary and secondary paths can cause network synchronization errors. Set the unique node address using the DIP switches on the associated Momentum I/O base before snapping the communication adapter into place.
CRITICAL WARNING
De-energize all power sources supplying the Modicon Momentum I/O base and associated field wiring before mounting or removing the communication adapter. Failure to do so can cause electrical arcing, damage internal backplane contacts, or initiate unexpected control system states.
Verify that the node address DIP switches on the Momentum I/O base are set to the correct, unique address assigned to this node on the Modbus Plus network.
Align the 170NEF16021 adapter with the interface connectors on the front of the Momentum I/O base.
Press the adapter firmly onto the base until the side locking tabs click securely into place, ensuring a flush mechanical connection.
Connect the primary Modbus Plus drop cable to Port A and the redundant drop cable to Port B, tightening the DB9 connector screws to secure the physical connection.
