Description

The Bently Nevada 177230-00-01-05 is a simple, loop-powered seismic transmitter designed to integrate machine vibration monitoring directly into programmable logic controllers (PLCs), DCS, and SCADA systems. The 177230-00-01-05 incorporates a ceramic shear sensing element and implements an industry-standard 4 to 20 mA loop-powered interface to measure overall vibration levels. This specific configuration provides a 0 to 12.7 mm/s (0 to 0.5 in/s) RMS measurement range across a frequency response of 10 Hz to 1 kHz (600 cpm to 60 kcpm), paired with multiple hazardous area approvals. It conditions and outputs a proportional 4 to 20 mA current loop alongside an unbuffered dynamic acceleration signal for detailed vibration analysis and machinery condition monitoring.

Features

  • Loop-powered 4 to 20 mA interface for direct connection to PLCs, DCS, and SCADA systems
  • Provides a proportional 4 to 20 mA velocity output signal alongside an unbuffered dynamic acceleration output
  • Ceramic shear sensing element design
  • No field configuration or adjustments required
  • Built-in self-test capability and protected interface
  • Hermetically sealed 316L stainless steel case construction
  • 3-pin MIL-C-5015 top electrical connector

Applications

  • Overall vibration monitoring for industrial rotating machinery
  • Plant asset condition monitoring integrated into PLC, DCS, or SCADA architectures
  • Balance of plant equipment monitoring
  • Machinery protection and catastrophic failure prevention

Pin B 4-20 mA Loop Return (Negative Loop Return for Pin A and common for Dynamic Signal)
Pin C Dynamic Acceleration Signal (Unbuffered, referenced to Pin B)

Installation Guidelines

  • Mounting: Mount directly to the machine via a stud into the 1/4-28 UNF tapped hole using a torque of 4 to 7 N-m (35.4 to 62.0 in-lbf).
  • Magnetic Base Handling: If using a magnetic base, roll the base onto the machine surface rather than snapping it into place to avoid generating high spike signals that may damage internal electronics.
  • Grounding and Isolation: Pin B (Dynamic Signal Negative) requires isolation from any ground. Grounding this terminal will short the 4 to 20 mA loop and result in loss of output.
  • Cable Selection: Connect using a 3-pin MIL-C-5015 mating connector with shielded three-conductor cables (18 to 22 AWG with 80% minimum shield coverage).

Compliance and Certifications

  • FCC: Complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules
  • EMC Directives: EMC Directive 2014/30/EU
  • Environmental Directives: ROHS Directive 2011/65/EU
  • Maritime Approvals: DNV rules for classification - Ships; DNV rules for classification - High speed and light craft; DNV offshore standards
  • cNRTLus Approvals: Class I, Div 2, Groups A, B, C, D (Ex nL IIC T4, AEx nA IIC T4); Class I, Div 1, Groups A, B, C, D; Class II, Div 1, Groups E, F, G; Class III, Div 1 (Ex ia IIC T4, AEx ia IIC T4)
  • ATEX/IECEx Approvals: Zone 0/1: II 1 G, Ex ia IIC T4 Ga; Zone 2: II 3 G, Ex na IIC T4 Gc (Ta = -40 degC to +80 degC)

Technical Datasheet

Bently Nevada 177230-00-01-05 Seismic Transmitter

What signals does the transmitter provide through its connector pins?

The device outputs a proportional 4 to 20 mA loop-powered velocity signal across Pin A and Pin B, and an unbuffered dynamic acceleration voltage signal across Pin C and Pin B.

What happens if Pin B is connected to electrical ground?

Pin B acts as the loop return and dynamic signal reference and requires isolation from ground. Grounding Pin B will short the 4 to 20 mA loop and result in no signal output.

What caution should be taken when using a magnetic mounting base with the device?

The transmitter should be rolled onto the machine surface rather than snapped into place, as snapping can create high voltage spikes that may damage internal electronics.
