Description
Engineered to deliver synchronized logic and motion control within the Sysmac platform, the Omron NJ301-1200 acts as a central processing hub for demanding mid-range automation architectures. By integrating motion control, PLC logic, and network connectivity into a single unified engine, this controller eliminates the latency associated with multi-processor architectures. It supports up to 8 motion control axes and offers built-in industrial Ethernet communication, facilitating seamless vertical integration from physical field devices to enterprise-level supervisory systems.
Features
-
Synchronized Execution: Executes motion control commands, network communications, and logic tasks within a single, deterministic scan cycle.
-
Scalable I/O Capacity: Supports up to 2,560 local and remote I/O points across a maximum of 40 physical configuration units (up to 3 expansion racks).
-
Robust Memory Architecture: Features 5 MB of program capacity, backed by 0.5 MB of non-volatile retained memory and 2 MB of volatile non-retained variable memory.
-
Built-In Motion Control: Handles up to 8 fully synchronized axes of motion, ideal for precise positioning, speed control, and electronic gearing.
-
Standards Compliance: Conforms to global industrial standards including cULus, NK, LR, CE, RCM, and KC guidelines.
Applications
- Synchronized multi-axis packaging machinery and cartoning lines.

Alternative Models & Compatibility
For larger installations, the NJ301 series scale-up pathways include the NJ501 series, which increases motion axis counts (up to 64 axes) and program memory. Program and variable structures remain fully compatible within the Sysmac Studio integrated development environment, allowing seamless deployment of identical control logic onto higher-end hardware with minor hardware target modifications.
Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes
To maintain proper thermal behavior in enclosed industrial panels, always maintain a minimum clearance of 20 mm above and below the controller unit. The integrated high-speed EtherCAT engine is highly sensitive to noise; ensure that double-shielded STP Cat5e or higher cables are used for all networking interfaces, and separate communication lines from high-voltage motor drive cabling by at least 100 mm.
Commissioning & Wiring Tips
Ensure the physical ground terminal (GR) is grounded directly to a dedicated grounding point with a resistance of less than 100 Ohm to prevent noise-induced communication errors. During commissioning, configure the EtherCAT ring/line topology explicitly inside Sysmac Studio before initializing the controller to prevent network communication faults (E001/E002 errors) during initial power-up cycles.
Installation Guidelines
CRITICAL WARNING: De-energize all primary and auxiliary power systems before starting mounting or termination activities. Failure to fully bleed residual system charges can lead to catastrophic hardware failure, localized arcing, or permanent operational damage to the microprocessor.
1
Mount the NJ301-1200 module firmly onto a standardized 35 mm DIN rail inside a protected IP54/NEMA 12 enclosure.
2
Affix the right-hand End Cover (provided with the CPU) to secure the internal bus structure and isolate the termination contacts.
3
Connect the functional ground terminal to a low-impedance ground bar using a minimum 2.0 mm² copper conductor.
4
Insert standard SD card or external backup media into the secure front-facing slot before powering on the unit to facilitate initial firmware verification and parameter loading.
