Description

The Universal Analog Input Slave Module (IMASI03) performs analog input signal processing for up to 16 independently configured channels and sends this digitized data to a Multi-Function Processor module (such as the IMMFP01/02/03) within the INFI 90 Process Management System. The module operates on a single printed circuit board that installs into one slot of an INFI 90 Module Mounting Unit (MMU) and interfaces to the master processor via the parallel synchronous slave expander bus.

By offloading complex input processing tasks—such as factory calibration correction, drift compensation, lead wire resistance adjustment, cold junction compensation, and linear scaling—the IMASI03 reduces processor overhead. Each channel features its own isolation amplifier providing under-range, over-range, and open input detection. Analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion features software-programmable resolution up to 24 bits, enabling highly accurate monitoring for complex process loops.

Features

  • 16 Independent Channels: Supports any mix of thermocouple, millivolt, RTD, high-level voltage, or current signals on a single module.
  • Variable A/D Resolution: Programmable software-selectable resolution from 16 to 24 bits per channel to balance scanning speed and accuracy.
  • Automatic Zero/Gain Calibration: Continuous background recalibration corrects for component aging and temperature drift without manual field intervention.
  • Comprehensive Signal Conditioning: Individual isolation amplifiers per channel deliver 250 VRMS common mode isolation and -110 dB common mode rejection.
  • Cold Junction Compensation: Includes an on-board cold junction reference on the termination device for thermocouples, with options for remote software-smoothed references.
  • Lead Wire Resistance Compensation: Automatically adjusts for series resistance in 3-wire RTDs, low-level millivolt, and thermocouple field wires.
  • Hot-Swappable Design: Can be physically removed or installed in the Module Mounting Unit backplane without disconnecting system power.

Applications

  • Power generation plant thermal monitoring (thermocouples and RTDs)
  • Chemical and petrochemical process loop control
  • High-accuracy low-level millivolt and high-level voltage data acquisition
  • Industrial current-loop (4-20 mA) field device interfacing

P3 Input Signal Pin Connections

Interfaces directly with field wiring terminal blocks via termination devices (NTAI06 termination unit or two NIAI05 termination modules).

Installation Guidelines

  1. Electrostatic Mitigation: Always wear a grounded static wrist strap when removing or inserting the module to change DIP switch or configuration jumpers. Keep the module inside its antistatic bag until physical installation.
  2. Address Selection (SW1): Set the binary module address (0 to 63) using contacts 3 through 8 on dipswitch SW1. Contacts 1 and 2 must remain closed (set to zero) for normal execution.
  3. On-Board Jumpers: Configure the pair of jumpers associated with each channel. Place the jumper connector pairs on pins 1-2 for voltage/current signals, or pins 2-3 for 3-wire RTD resistance parameters.
  4. Backplane Dipshunts: Ensure that a 12-position dipshunt is properly seated in the slave expander bus socket on the MMU backplane between the master processor module and the IMASI03. Disconnect power before installing backplane dipshunts.
  5. Physical Seating: Align the printed circuit board with the guide rails of the designated MMU slot. Slide the unit forward firmly until the front panel is completely flush with the frame, then lock it into position by rotating the two captive faceplate latches one-half turn vertically.

Compliance and Certifications

  • CSA certified for use as process control equipment in ordinary (non-hazardous) locations.
  • Complies with IEEE-472 Surge Withstand Capability (SWC) tests.

Technical Datasheet

ABB IMASI03 Bailey Infi 90 Analog Input Slave Module

Does the module require manual user calibration during routine maintenance?

No. The device features recorded factory calibration data in its nonvolatile memory and performs continuous automatic background recalibration to adjust for temperature drift and component aging during normal operation.

What happens to the channel scan data if a field wire becomes disconnected?

The module features built-in open input detection across all channel configurations. If an open wire or disconnected termination cable is detected, the device reports bad quality status on that channel to the master controller.

Can I mix different input signals like RTDs and thermocouples on the same device?

Yes. Each of the 16 channels is independently programmable via software function codes and physical jumpers, allowing any mix of thermocouple, millivolt, RTD, current, or high-level voltage inputs on a single module.

What is the continuous common mode isolation rating of the input channels?

The module provides a maximum continuous absolute rating of 250 VRMS common mode isolation channel-to-channel and channel-to-ground.
