Description

The Allen-Bradley 1756-OV16E is a 16-point digital DC output module designed for use within the ControlLogix chassis system. Operating within a 10 to 30V DC range, this sinking current output module provides individual electronic fusing per point to ensure robust circuit protection. It utilizes a Coordinated System Time (CST) Timestamped Fuse Data—Output Data communication format, enabling the module to transmit a Fuse Blown status along with the exact system clock value from the local chassis whenever a fuse blows or resets. This diagnostic capability allows for precise fault tracking and rapid troubleshooting in critical process control applications.

Features

  • 16-Point Sinking Outputs: Provides 16 distinct sinking current digital outputs operating between 10...30V DC.
  • Per-Point Electronic Fusing: Individual electronic fuse protection across all 16 channels to isolate faults and protect field-side wiring.
  • Scheduled Outputs: Offers output synchronization referenced to the Coordinated System Time (CST) with a maximum synchronization variance of 16.7 seconds.
  • Configurable Fault States: Each point can be independently configured to hold its last state, turn on, or turn off (default) during a fault condition.
  • Program Mode Configuration: Configurable states per point during Program mode, supporting hold last state, on, or off (default).
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Returns real-time Fuse Blown status accompanied by local chassis system clock timestamps for both fuse blow and reset events.

Applications

  • Solenoide valve control in automated assembly lines.
  • Pilot light and indicator panel management.
  • Interfacing with DC inputs of secondary control devices or motor drives.
  • General-purpose low-side (sinking) switching applications in discrete manufacturing.

Installation Guidelines

DIN Rail and Chassis Installation

  • Ensure the ControlLogix chassis power supply is switched off before inserting or removing the module.
  • Align the circuit board of the module with the top and bottom chassis guides in the designated slot.
  • Slide the module into the chassis until the top and bottom locking tabs click into place securely.

Wiring and Polarity

  • Verify all field-side power is disconnected before working on the terminal blocks.
  • Connect the common positive rail (+V DC) to the field load, and route the return path through the module's sinking output terminals to the negative DC reference.
  • Maintain proper separation between low-voltage DC signals and high-voltage AC power lines within the enclosure wire ducts to prevent electromagnetic interference.

How does the module communicate a fuse failure back to the controller?

The module uses the CST Timestamped Fuse Data communication format. When a fuse blows or is reset, it returns a Fuse Blown status along with the precise system clock value from the local chassis.

What is the default state of an output point if the controller enters Program mode?

The default state for each output point in Program mode is Off, though it can be user-configured to Hold Last State or turn On.

What does the scheduled outputs feature provide on this module?

It provides output synchronization referenced to the Coordinated System Time with a maximum synchronization timing of 16.7 seconds.
