The Allen-Bradley 1785-L30B is a PLC-5 standard processor module configured for centralized control and distributed industrial automation systems. This programmable logic controller features 32 Kilowords of battery-backed static RAM user memory to maintain logic data, registers, and control configuration during power loss conditions. The hardware incorporates multiple embedded communication interfaces, including two DH+/Remote I/O combination channels that function as either a scanner or an adapter, alongside a dedicated 25-pin serial port supporting RS-232C, RS-423, and RS-422A protocols. Capable of managing up to 1024 total I/O devices in any mix, or a complementary configuration of 1024 inputs and 1024 outputs, this processor interfaces directly with discrete and analog control components across diverse factory automation architectures.

Features

  • Battery-backed static RAM configuration ensures user memory data protection when primary control power is disconnected.
  • EEPROM non-volatile program backup option utilizing 1785-ME16, 1785-ME32, 1785-ME64, or 1785-M100 memory modules.
  • Front-panel three-position keyswitch for manual selection of Run, PROG (Program), and REM (Remote) processor operating modes.
  • Dedicated diagnostic LED visual indicators for BATT (Battery status), PROC (Processor state), FORCE (I/O forces enabled), COMM (Channel 0 activity), and individual channel status.
  • Embedded Control Coprocessor Expansion Port to accommodate advanced system processing enhancements.
  • Integrated support for universal remote I/O architectures to link up to 28 remote I/O chassis.

Applications

  • Distributed assembly and high-speed discrete production lines.
  • Large-scale SCADA monitoring and multi-node plant networking.
  • Analog process automation including temperature, pressure, and flow loops.
  • Centralized machinery control requiring high-density discrete and specialty I/O integration.

Installation Guidelines

  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Prevention: Personnel must wear an approved wrist strap grounding device or touch a grounded object to discharge static electricity before handling the module. Avoid direct contact with the backplane connector or integrated pins.
  • Enclosure Specifications: Install the controller chassis horizontally inside a heavy-duty steel enclosure to block environmental contaminants, atmospheric dust, moisture, and EMI/RFI noise interference.
  • Convection Cooling Spacing: Maintain a minimum clear spacing of 153 mm (6 inches) above and below the chassis, 102 mm (4 inches) on both sides, and 51 mm (2 inches) vertically and horizontally from internal wiring ducts or adjacent terminal strips.
  • Temperature Maintenance: Ensure the ambient air moving upward through the convection cooling column does not exceed 60 degC directly below the controller assembly.
  • Module Placement Sequence: Arrange chassis modules from left to right starting with high-priority block-transfer modules closest to the processor, followed by DC inputs, DC outputs, AC inputs, and ending with AC outputs at the far right.

Compliance and Certifications

  • IEC 60068-2-1 (Test Ab, Un-packaged Nonoperating Cold / Test Ad, Operating Cold)
  • IEC 60068-2-2 (Test Bc, Un-packaged Nonoperating Dry Heat / Test Bd, Operating Dry Heat)
  • IEC 60068-2-14 (Test Na, Un-packaged Nonoperating Thermal Shock / Test Nb, Operating Thermal Shock)

Allen-Bradley 1785-L30B PLC-5 Standard Processor Module

What happens to the program data when the module is powered down?

The module utilizes a 1770-XYC battery to preserve all user program and data records stored within the static RAM user memory when primary power is removed.

How long does the battery remain functional after the low battery indicator turns on?

When the front panel BATT LED indicator lights up red, the internal battery will remain operational for up to 5 days from the first occurrence of the low charge signal.

Does this device support extended local I/O chassis configurations?

No, the device has a specification of zero extended local I/O chassis and does not feature the hardware capability to connect extended local racks.

What are the configuration choices for the integrated communication ports?

Channels 1A and 1B can be independently configured via system software to operate as a remote I/O scanner, a remote I/O adapter, or a Data Highway Plus (DH+) interface.
