Description
Engineered for decentralized automation and control tasks, the Beckhoff BX5100 serves as a high-performance CANopen Bus Terminal Controller featuring an integrated PLC runtime system. This intelligent controller bridges the gap between modular Bus Terminals and higher-level fieldbus networks, enabling autonomous execution of IEC 61131-3 programs. The unit operates reliably as a standalone local controller or as a distributed intelligence station within complex industrial network architectures.
The controller processes local input/output signals with high efficiency, utilizing a robust PLC runtime system capable of executing complex control loops. It is equipped with dedicated memory zones for programs and data, alongside non-volatile memory allocations to safeguard remanent and persistent data. Network communication is managed through a standard 5-pin CANopen interface, while auxiliary serial ports facilitate local diagnostics, programming, and peripheral system integration.
Features
- Integrated TwinCAT PLC runtime system supporting all IEC 61131-3 standard programming languages (IL, LD, FBD, SFC, ST).
- Fast program execution with a typical PLC cycle time of approximately 1 ms for 1,000 instructions.
- Dual serial interfaces (COM1 and COM2) supporting RS232 and RS485 physical layers.
- Integrated Smart System Bus (SSB) for connecting downstream peripheral devices and expansion modules.
- Local user interface featuring an illuminated 2 x 16 character FSTN display and a integrated joystick switch for parameterization and diagnostics.
- Battery-powered real-time clock for system date and time retention.
- Flexible I/O expansion supporting up to 64 local Bus Terminals directly, or up to 255 terminals using K-bus extension systems.
Applications
- Decentralized process control in water and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Modular machine control systems in packaging and material handling.
- Distributed data acquisition and processing in factory automation networks.
- Auxiliary subsystem monitoring and control in power generation plants.

Installation Guidelines
- Mount the module horizontally on a standard 35 mm DIN rail (conforming to EN 60715) using the integrated locking mechanism.
- Ensure all side-by-side terminal alignments utilize the built-in double slot and key connection system for stable mechanical integrity.
- For electrical termination, use solid, stranded, or ferruled conductors with a cross-section of 0.08 to 2.5 mm² (or 0.14 to 1.5 mm² with ferrule).
- Maintain a stripping length of 8 to 9 mm on all field wiring prior to inserting into the spring-actuated terminal clamps.
- Ensure environmental conditions remain within the specified -25 to +60 degC operating range and that ventilation pathways are unobstructed.
