Processing analog differential signals within the Beckhoff I/O system, the Beckhoff KS3001 Bus Terminal delivers high-precision voltage measurement across a -10 to +10 V range. This single-channel module features a pluggable wiring design, allowing rapid field replacement without disturbing the terminal wiring harness. Operating directly on the K-bus, it transmits digitized measurement values to the higher-level controller with electrical isolation, making it ideal for demanding industrial environments requiring reliable signal acquisition.

Features

  • Single-channel differential input architecture for high noise immunity.
  • Pluggable wiring level (KS series) for tool-free terminal replacement.
  • 12-bit analog-to-digital conversion resolution (11-bit for 0 to 10 V range).
  • Complete 500 V electrical isolation between the K-bus and the signal circuit.
  • Direct power supply via the K-bus, eliminating the need for lateral power contacts.
  • Compact 12 mm housing width for high-density DIN rail mounting.

Applications

  • Differential voltage monitoring in industrial process control.
  • Sensor integration in test benches and laboratory automation.
  • Analog signal acquisition in high-noise electrical environments.
  • TwinCAT-based distributed control architectures.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The KS3001 is the pluggable-wiring equivalent of the standard KL3001 Bus Terminal. While they share identical electrical specifications, register mappings, and TwinCAT configurations, the KS3001 features a detachable terminal block. This allows field maintenance teams to replace a faulty module without disconnecting any field wiring, significantly reducing downtime in critical process loops.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

Always verify that the common-mode voltage (Ucm) between the differential inputs and the internal K-bus ground does not exceed the absolute maximum limit of 35 V. Exceeding this threshold will saturate the differential input stage, resulting in clipped or highly inaccurate readings, and can eventually lead to permanent hardware degradation of the input operational amplifiers.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

For high-accuracy applications, use shielded twisted-pair (STP) cabling for the analog signal lines. Connect the cable shield to a low-impedance functional earth (FE) ground rail as close to the terminal entry point as possible. In TwinCAT, the process image can be configured to include control and status bytes (1x8 bit) to monitor diagnostic flags such as overrange or underrange conditions.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING

De-energize the entire Bus Terminal system (both K-bus power supply and any field-side voltages) before inserting, removing, or wiring the KS3001 module. Failure to do so can cause electrical arcing, damage the internal K-bus contacts, or corrupt the process image of adjacent terminals.

1

Mount the terminal onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail (conforming to EN 60715) by sliding it onto the rail until the locking mechanism engages securely.

2

Slide the module laterally to connect it with the adjacent Bus Terminals, ensuring the tongue-and-groove slot connection and the lateral K-bus contacts are fully mated.

3

Insert the pluggable wiring block into the front of the terminal housing until it clicks into place.

4

Wire the differential signal lines using a screwdriver to actuate the spring clamps. Strip the wire ends to 9–10 mm before insertion.

What is the difference between the Beckhoff KS3001 and KL3001?

The KS3001 features a pluggable wiring level, allowing the terminal block to be replaced without disconnecting the field wiring. The KL3001 has fixed wiring terminals.

What is the maximum common-mode voltage for the KS3001?

The maximum common-mode voltage (Ucm) is 35 V. Exceeding this limit will cause measurement saturation or signal distortion.

Does the KS3001 require external power contacts?

No, the KS3001 is powered entirely via the K-bus (typically drawing 65 mA) and does not connect to the lateral power contacts.

What is the resolution of the KS3001 analog input?

The module provides 12-bit resolution across the full -10 V to +10 V range, which scales to 11-bit resolution when configured for a 0 to 10 V range.
