Description

Direct connection of SSI encoders to the K-bus system is facilitated by the BECKHOFF KS5051 1-channel SSI encoder interface terminal. This module provides a dedicated interface for absolute positioning systems, receiving differential RS422 signals and supplying them to the higher-level controller via the process image. The KS5051 features a pluggable wiring level, making it highly serviceable for rapid module replacement without disconnecting field wiring.

Operating as a bidirectional unit, this bus terminal supports data transmission rates up to 1 MHz and accommodates variable serial input widths of up to 24 bits. It integrates 500 V electrical isolation between the internal K-bus and the field potential to protect sensitive processing electronics from electrical surges in harsh environments.

Features

  • 1-channel SSI encoder interface with bidirectional communication.
  • Pluggable connection level for fast, tool-free terminal replacement.
  • Supports differential signal transmission based on the RS422 standard.
  • 500 V electrical isolation between K-bus and field potential.
  • Compact 12 mm housing width designed for DIN rail mounting.

Applications

  • Industrial motion control and positioning feedback systems.
  • CNC machining centers and robotic manufacturing cells.
  • Heavy machinery, materials handling, and packaging lines.

Installation Guidelines

  • Mount the module onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail (conforming to EN 60715) until the lock snaps firmly in place.
  • Ensure all electrical contacts are clean and dry before side-by-side mounting using the integrated double slot and key connection.
  • Always supply the 5 V DC power via the power contacts from an upstream power supply terminal, such as the KL9505.
  • Use shielded twisted-pair cables for the RS422 encoder connections to guarantee signal integrity in environments with high electromagnetic interference.

Compliance and Certifications

  • CE, UL
  • ATEX (Ex marking: II 3 G Ex nA IIC T4 Gc)

What is the key difference between the Beckhoff KS5051 and the KL5051?

The KS5051 features a pluggable wiring level, allowing the terminal blocks to be disconnected and replaced without removing the actual wiring. The KL5051 has non-pluggable, fixed terminal connections.

What is the maximum SSI transmission frequency supported by the KS5051?

The KS5051 supports a data transfer rate of up to 1 MHz for absolute encoder signals.

Does the KS5051 provide power directly to the absolute encoder?

Yes, the KS5051 provides a 5 V DC encoder supply, which is sourced via the power contacts from an appropriate power supply terminal, such as the KL9505.

What standards does the KS5051 comply with for environmental resistance?

It conforms to EN 60068-2-6 for vibration resistance, EN 60068-2-27 for shock resistance, and is rated for operating temperatures between 0 and +55 degC.
