Product Overview

The EL1852 (EL1852) is a high-density, "combi" EtherCAT Terminal designed by Beckhoff to provide a space-saving solution for modern industrial automation. This 12 mm compact terminal integrates 8 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs into a single housing, specifically engineered for applications where cabinet space is at a premium. Utilizing a flat-ribbon cable connection technology, the EL1852 simplifies large-scale wiring tasks and significantly reduces the potential for wiring errors during installation. Compliant with EN 61131-2 (Type 1/3), this terminal is optimized for 24 V DC operations, providing 0.5 A per output channel with integrated reverse voltage protection. Its ability to handle ohmic, inductive, and lamp loads makes it a versatile choice for sectors ranging from electronics assembly to specialized machine building where high-density I/O and rapid signal processing are essential.

Technical Configuration

The EL1852 architecture leverages the high-speed E-bus communication of the Beckhoff EtherCAT system. The input stage features a 3 ms filter to ensure signal stability against industrial noise, while the output stage is designed for high-speed switching with a typical turn-on time of 60 µs. The most distinctive feature is the flat-ribbon cable interface (AWG 28), which allows for the rapid connection of multiple I/O points via standard 1.27 mm spacing connectors. The terminal draws a typical 100 mA from the E-bus and features 500 V electrical isolation between the field potential and the internal logic. Housed in a polycarbonate compact casing with integrated signal LEDs, the module supports variable installation positions on standard 35 mm DIN rails, ensuring mechanical stability through a double slot and key connection system.

Technical FAQs

What are the primary benefits of the flat-ribbon cable connection on the EL1852?

The flat-ribbon interface allows for mass-termination of I/O points. This is particularly beneficial in series machine production, as it eliminates the need for individual point-to-point wiring, drastically reducing assembly time and the likelihood of cross-wiring errors.

Can the outputs on the EL1852 drive inductive loads like solenoid valves?

Yes. The EL1852 is rated for inductive loads and includes a breaking energy capacity of less than 150 mJ per channel. It also features integrated reverse voltage protection to safeguard the internal power stage against back-EMF spikes.

How does the EL1852 handle signal levels for inputs?

The inputs conform to EN 61131-2 Type 3 standards. A "0" signal is recognized between -3 V and +5 V, while a "1" signal is recognized between 11 V and 30 V, with a typical input current of 3 mA. This ensures compatibility with a wide range of industrial sensors.

Engineering & Installation Guide

Flat-Ribbon Cable Handling and AWG 28 Standards:

When utilizing the EL1852, ensure that the flat-ribbon cable used is AWG 28 with a standard 1.27 mm pitch. Use a professional crimping tool to ensure gas-tight connections at the connector head. Improperly crimped ribbon cables can lead to intermittent "E-bus State" errors or localized voltage drops that may affect the "1" signal detection on the input channels.

Thermal Management and Side-by-Side Mounting:

The EL1852 is designed for variable installation positions. However, when mounting multiple high-density I/O terminals side-by-side, ensure the ambient temperature within the cabinet does not exceed 55 Celsius. Although the module is highly efficient, the cumulative heat from 8 outputs operating at 0.5 A each can be significant. Maintain a clean airflow path across the top and bottom of the terminal housing.

Grounding and EMC Immunity:

To maintain compliance with EN 61000-6-2, the DIN rail must be properly grounded to the functional earth (FE) of the control cabinet. The double slot and key connection system not only provides mechanical stability but also assists in maintaining a consistent ground potential across the EtherCAT terminal block. Ensure that the 24 V field supply is properly filtered to prevent power-line noise from affecting the 3 ms input filter performance.
