Product Overview

The EL3041 (EL3041) is a precision 1-channel analog input terminal designed to process industrial standard signals in the 0 to 20 mA range. Utilizing single-ended technology, this module is an essential component for integrating field sensors—such as pressure transmitters, flow meters, and level sensors—directly into the EtherCAT I/O system. The EL3041 delivers 12-bit resolution (presented in a 16-bit format) with a fast default conversion time of 0.625 ms, ensuring responsive data acquisition for dynamic process control. Engineered for versatility and reliability, it features activatable FIR/IIR filters to suppress line interference, making it ideal for high-precision monitoring in water treatment, chemical processing, and general manufacturing environments where signal integrity is a priority.

Technical Configuration

The EL3041 hardware architecture is optimized for seamless integration into the EtherCAT E-bus, from which it draws its power (typically 130 mA). The single-ended input circuitry features a typical internal resistance of 85 Ohms and a 1 kHz limit frequency input filter to ensure stable readings. For advanced process control, the module supports limit value monitoring and offers both standard and compact process image configurations. With a dielectric strength of 30 V and 500 V electrical isolation between the signal voltage and the E-bus, the terminal provides robust protection for the internal logic against field-side electrical disturbances. The compact 12 mm housing includes integrated signal LEDs for immediate local diagnostics of the analog channel status.

Technical FAQs

What is the difference between "Single-Ended" and "Differential" inputs for the EL3041?

The EL3041 uses single-ended technology, meaning the input signal refers to a common internal ground (0V). This simplifies wiring for 2-wire and 3-wire sensors that share a common reference. For environments with extreme electromagnetic interference or where long cable runs are required, a differential input terminal (like the EL305x series) may be preferred to provide better common-mode rejection.

How do the integrated FIR and IIR filters benefit my process data?

These digital filters allow you to smooth the analog signal and filter out high-frequency noise or "jitter" caused by industrial machinery. The Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter provides a linear phase response, while the Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter mimics traditional analog filters; both can be activated via the TwinCAT System Manager to improve the stability of your PID loops.

Can the EL3041 be used in hazardous locations?

Yes. The terminal is ATEX certified with the marking II 3 G Ex nA IIC T4 Gc. It is suitable for use in Zone 2 explosive atmospheres, provided it is installed in a suitable enclosure that meets the requirements of the local electrical safety standards and environmental conditions.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Signal Grounding and Shielding: To maintain the < +/- 0.3 percent measuring accuracy, use shielded twisted-pair cables for the 0-20 mA signal. The shield should be grounded as close to the terminal as possible using a shield connection clip (e.g., ZB8500) to ensure high-frequency interference is diverted to the DIN rail.

  • Wiring Standards: The terminal features a spring-actuation system. For solid or stranded wires, ensure a cross-section of 0.08 to 2.5 mm squared (AWG 28-14). When using ferrules, the cross-section should be between 0.14 and 1.5 mm squared. A stripping length of 8 to 9 mm is critical for a gas-tight, vibration-resistant connection.

  • Operating Temperature Range: The EL3041 is rated for an extended temperature range of -25 to +60 deg C. When mounting in high-density cabinets, ensure vertical air flow is not obstructed. If the ambient temperature regularly exceeds 50 deg C, maintain a 10 mm clearance from adjacent high-heat modules (like power terminals) to prevent thermal drift in the analog-to-digital converter.
